Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Breakthrough on the pier

RE 'FEMALE SAILORS share historic first homecoming kiss,' front page, Dec. 22: As a Navy veteran who served under 'Don't ask, don't tell,' I was thrilled to see the photo of the two female sailors kissing on the front page.

While serving, I was friends with co-workers who were homosexual and had to watch as they hid who they were while serving their country with honor. I was able to share my first kiss publicly when coming home from a six-month deployment, knowing that my homosexual friends had to wait until they were someplace private.

This kiss was a long time coming, and I feel that this is no different from any other couple sharing a first kiss upon homecoming. Love is love, no matter who the couple is.

Gays and lesbians have every right to the same rights as straight people, including loving one another without fear of reprisal or ridicule (and yes, kissing on the pier like any other couple).
