Cheap Eats: Hot diggity! You should try 'em

Why I liked it:

With a menu that includes hamburgers, an assortment of cold and hot sandwiches and a bevy of sides, Pappy's Hot Diggity Dogs in Red Mill is more than the hot dogs the restaurant's name alludes to. But it was the promise of a good frankfurter that called me in for lunch one day recently.

A half-dozen dogs are offered: the classic wiener, smoked sausage, bratwurst, kielbasa, knockwurst and my meal choice, the New York Hot Sausage. From the choice of embellishments, I picked deli mustard, chopped onions and sauerkraut as toppings.

The sausage was outstanding. A slightly blistered skin gave way bite after bite to a smoky link with some great heat. The mustard and onions added extra bite, and the 'kraut helped temper the spice. A soft bun housed the whole thing, which was delicious and filling.

A varying assortment of sides includes three types of fries: classic, fresh-cut or house, and sweet potato. There are also items like onion rings, baked beans and fried pickles. My sweet potato fries had a nice firm exterior that gave way to a rich, earthy, moist interior; they were thoroughly enjoyed.

Look for "Pappy Hour" specials, such as $1 hot dogs every Tuesday from 6 to7 p.m., for even more cheap-eats bargains.

Pappy's is GREAT! It is very Unique as the people are genuinelly friendly and polite. It's nice to have a new place to go to - Everything is spic and span clean, Friendly, Staff is sweet and pleasant and welcoming. Once you go there you keep going back. All my friends and their families are going there on a regular basis. Can't wait for more of them to pop up around Va Beach!

This places looks and tastes exactly like Famous Uncle Al's. Not that that's a bad thing, but Pappy's is not unique.

Pappy's is a great little spot. The Staff is wonderful and from the area. Great place to grab a bite before golf or after at Hell's Point. Unlike the other places that may offer food along the same line the place is spotless, bright, fresh and super clean. Great review and good job Pappy's.
