PORTSMOUTH

A 37-year-old man will serve five years in prison for trying to bribe a Department of Motor Vehicles employee.

Jeremiah E. Bryant was convicted of bribery of a public official in May. Racheal Smith, a DMV testing supervisor, testified that he offered her $300 to help him get his commercial driver's license.

W. Thomas Knowles, the prosecutor, had asked for the sentence, saying Bryant had a criminal record that included 21 felonies and 15 misdemeanors dating to 1993.
