Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Hatred of love

Re 'Celebration of sin' and 'Moment to remember,' letters, Dec. 24: These letters represent a deep fetid swamp of bigotry and hatred that lies just barely below the surface in this country. This swamp is filled by the fear of 'the other' that infects so many in this country. We see this in all the homophobic, anti-Muslim 'religious' right websites. We hear it from Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Pamela Geller and the rest. We see it paraded on Fox News. This is the most divisive force in America today. I ask those who have a problem with this display of love and happiness to ask themselves why they think that hatred is the answer.

Pot meet kettle

Amazing that the 2 letters from the 24th generated 7 letters against them today. Each one decrying what the writer perceived to be "hatred" and "intolerance" and yet they do not see they are expressing the same sentiments, albeit in a different form.

Each letter today has shown a total lack of "tolerance" for the opinion of others and in equally hateful language, along with broad brush stereotyping.

I wasn't thrilled with the way the other letters expressed their dislike of the photo, but I'm truly disappointed with how others have chosen to express their disagreement with those letters as shown in today's letters.

It was not perceived hatred

It was not perceived hatred and bigotry I was referencing, it is actual hatred and bigotry. Have you actually listened to Beck and Limbaugh spout lies and hatred against the left and progressives? Have you ever read Pam Geller at AtlasShrugs? Have you read the comments on that site? Have you ever looked at what Bryan Fischer at American Family Values has said? Have you ever read what Alan Caruba of Tea Party Nation says? How about Peter LaBarbera at Americans For Truth About Homosexuality? Joseph Farah at World News Daily? No? They are but the tip of the iceberg. Virtually all of the Republican candidates for president support these people. You can Google these people or check our the RightWingWatch website. I have personally read thousands of comment on various right wing web site and they are truly disgusting and make me ashamed that I share the same country with them.
So yes I'm intolerant of so called preachers calling gays children of Satan and abominations. Of saying that acceptance of gays will destroy America. And on and on.
The bigotry and hatred is very, very real and is very, very prevalent.

Yes it is

and denials, attempts to reverse the reality or shallow attempts at justification or downplaying the reality only make it worse. It seems the Republicans have become the party of bigotry, intolerance and hate. That cannot be tolerated.

Al, I'm a bit confused by

Al, I'm a bit confused by your comment. Are you saying that all of what I pointed out about the homophobia prevelant in the religious right is not real? I gave enough information to check it out, its all documented. Do you really believe that the likes of Beck, Limbaugh and Geller are not spreading hate and fear? The the Republican party of today is a bastion of truth and decency? I don't know what version of reality you live in, but in the real real world bigotry and hatred are everywhere.

yep, you're a little confused

You misread his comment.

Al Markowitz is a friendly. Hold your ire.

Exactly

I am agreeing with him.

Sorry Al. I said its not

Sorry Al. I said its not perceived hatred and bigorty and your replay said yes it is so I thought you were saying that the harted of whcich I spoke was not real. Didn't mean to jump on one of the good guys. I'm ready for the wet noodle lashing now.

It is hard to be tolerant of

It is hard to be tolerant of intolerance.

Exactly

And that is why I have finally decided I refuse to tolerate it anymore, especially from those who allegedly promote "tolerance" with an intolerant attitude.

You are playing with words today.

Someone who vehemently objects to racism is "intolerant?" Someone who vehemently objects to sexism is "intolerant?" And you are not going to tolerate such people any more? We should be tolerant of racists, sexists, nativists and homophobes or we are "intolerant"? You have twisted these words beyond recognition.
