TEHRAN, Iran

An Iranian surveillance plane has recorded video and photographed a U.S. aircraft carrier during Iran’s ongoing navy drill near a strategic waterway in the Persian Gulf, the official IRNA news agency reported Thursday.

The report did not provide details and it was unclear what information the Iranian military could glean from such footage. But the announcement is an indication Iran is seeking to cast its navy as having a powerful role in the region’s waters.

IRNA quoted Iran’s navy chief, Adm. Habibollah Sayyari, as saying the action shows that Iran has “control over the moves by foreign forces” in the area where Tehran is holding a 10-day military exercise.

“An Iranian vessel and surveillance plane have tracked, filmed and photographed a U.S. aircraft carrier as it was entering the Gulf of Oman from the Persian Gulf,” Sayyari said.

He added that the “foreign fleet will be warned by Iranian forces if it enters the area of the drill.”

State TV showed what appeared to be the reported video, but it was not possible to make out the details of the carrier because the footage was filmed from far away.

The Iranian exercise is taking place in international waters near the Strait of Hormuz – the passageway for one-sixth of the world’s oil supply.

Beyond it lie vast bodies of water, including the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet is also active in the area, as are warships of several other countries that patrol for pirates there.

The aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, based in Bremerton, Wash., and San Diego-based guided-missile cruiser Mobile Bay headed out from the Gulf and through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, after a visit to Dubai’s Jebel Ali port, said Lt. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the U.S. 5th Fleet.

She described the passage through the strait as “a pre-planned, routine transit” for the carrier, which is providing air support from the north Arabian Sea to troops in Afghanistan.

Rebarich did not directly address Iranian claims of possessing the reported footage but said the 5th Fleet’s “interaction with the regular Iranian Navy continues to be within the standards of maritime practice, well known, routine and professional.”

And the whole time they were filming

I am sure they were being tracked with a fire control radar locked on ready to go if they did something stupid like try to fire on the ship. Trust me, our ships sail through the strait there at general quarters ready to defend themselves. Been there done that back in 1987 when I was on USS Klakring (FFG-42) and we replace USS Stark after she was "acidently" shot with the exocit missle. The US Navy won't play games there. It will be deadly serious actions on their part if Iran starts something. And the US will be defending themselves and not throwing the first punch.

Iran

Iran could have saved money and just logged on to Google Earth. (Yes I know it isn't real time.)

Holy crap

The Iranians have discovered moving pictures!

oooohhhh scary

That video reminds of the guy that goes to tease a dog that is behind a fence. Know what I mean?

I fear one day this "nut

I fear one day this "nut case" in Iran will do something really stupid that will trigger us or Israel to answer and a lot of innocents will die, possibly on both sides. We can only hope his neighbors will understand the actions taken against him and leave him to stand alone. He is a real threat to peace in the region, but then that is his goal anyway, to start the end fighting.

I bet............

I bet they get some more pictures for their collection. Like cruise missiles from the front with a nice blue sky in the background.

Hilarious

This video is about as scary as the Iranian Navy. It goes to show how much of a dream world Iranian leaders are living in.

and that world they live in should scare the crud out of any

sane individual. He does live in a world totally foriegn to us. He plays by his own rules. His rules, we cannot comprehend or fathom. If he thinks he can strike a blow and hurt us somehow either in the media or on the battle field, he will.

The Liberals/Dems should understand this more than Conservatives and -Rs because libs in particular will say or do anything if it means hurting conservatives values and the -Rs. Even if it means causing great harm to our country. Look at all this class warfare they have created. Division from within. Ackma is feeding off this division our Pres is pushing. To keep power, libs will do anything including bringing our country to her knees. This is embolding Iran to push at us.

Thank GOD for our Navy.

What an ignorant comment

Being related to a party has nothing to do with the article, and for your education; it was a liberal/dem president who risked his career and sent in our boys to take out Bin Laden into a nuclear power country that was supposed to be our friend. You call that sitting around and doing nothing?

Judging by you other comments it would seem that all you do is sit around all day and type up useless comments. Here is an idea, go to the library and read up a little on political history, and maybe next time you comment, you might have some facts to back you rants. You might also might get a clue as to what Ahmadinejad's goals might be.

here is one of their super duper carrier videos
