VIRGINIA BEACH

Perhaps he was looking to do some very-last-minute Christmas shopping.

Police say a man broke into a closed Walmart store about 2 a.m. Christmas morning, taking electronics and games.

Employees of the Walmart at 657 Phoenix Drive, off Lynnhaven Parkway north of Lynnhaven Mall, returned to work Christmas evening and discovered the break-in, police said Tuesday. Someone had forcibly entered through the garden center and smashed several glass cases in the electronics section, according to a police news release.

The burglar took video game systems, Xbox games and iPads totaling more than $500, according to an online police report.

Walmart security officials thought they recognized the crook recorded on store cameras, police said. The next day, police arrested Fred Johnson Jr., 28, of the 700 block of Wiley Drive in Norfolk, on charges of burglary and grand larceny.

Johnson remained in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond Tuesday.
