Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Moment to remember

Re 'Female sailors share historic homecoming kiss,' front page, Dec. 22: What are we coming to when a photograph of two female sailors kissing is put on the same front page as the tragic death of a soldier under questionable circumstances involving his comrades in arms?

This leads us to believe this is normal adult behavior. The more we see, the more desensitized we become. It is the 'frog in a pan of water on a burner' analogy where slowly turning up the heat eventually results in the end of the frog.

We are being desensitized to the moral issues that face us daily through the media.

I know this will offend someone, but no one worries about offending those of us who feel that glamorizing this moment to highlight a social issue takes away from the hundreds of other sailors who returned that day. It is time to stand for what we believe in.

While I support the individual's right to live as she wants, I fail to see the merit of this moment. While 'don't ask, don't tell' may have been an unwise policy, glamorizing the results of the repeal is equally unwise.

John T. Roberts

Are you related to Oral Roberts? My goodness, you would have one thinking homosexuals are the root cause of all of America's ills, especially the disintegration of marriage and family life. How comical you are, sir. The divorce rate is astronomical and it's men and women. Can't blame gays for the often selfish and immature decisions hetero's made to get married and have babies before they even know themselves, much less a partner. IMHO, the breakdown of civilization has more to do with blatant greed, judgmental and uncaring people, lobbyists, religion that espouses superiority and bigotry, unscrupulous corporations, filthy politicians, and nothing to do with our fellow brothers and sisters who are born gay.

We are now in the enlightened age

It's now OK to physically change the sex of your adopted children without their consent. Go ahead. have two mommies or even two dads. it won't affect the minds of the little children. After all, is there any such thing as normal? I hope we don't run out of regular people who make babies.

If your talking about Thomas

If your talking about Thomas Lobel and his two moms, you should know the the Religious Right's story on this is bogus. The kid insisted on the change but the moms didn't want it. Only after much consultation with professionals did they give in to the change HE wanted.

Fake and Take

Wasn't that photo staged? Too many parallels with the famous Times Square shot of 1945, when a sailor grabbed a woman. Art students will want to study the similarities.

Can the editor (and photographer) assure us the event was spontaneous, and the photog just happened to take a lucky shot???

The propaganda doesn't stop. So beware the photo op.

Plato Told...

Plato argued that society has a material interest in the selection of the symbolism it espouses, because some symbolisms are more conducive to a well ordered republic than others.

We know as a practical matter that the monogamous, heterosexual family is the strongest, most healthy social unit.

So -- a la Plato -- if one wants a strong, healthy society, one should give preferential attention to the monogamous, heterosexual model and not glamorize other models or treat them as equal and equivalent.

I agree with the letter writer. By sensationalizing this particular kiss, The Pilot insults readers who don't share its views, works against families who are striving to instill their own legitimate values, and contributes to the general deconstruction of American culture.

A lot of people don't share my views

but I don't think they are insulting me.

God gave us hetero and homosexual beings. And He has for as far as we have documented history.

He must have a reason.

The only reason this may have been highlighted is because, frankly, it is news.

Man bites dog is news.

Men kissing their wives is old hat. But, of course, judging by the mess us heteros have made of marriage, maybe kissing should be revitalized.

Perhaps those young ladies can teach us something.

Yes, It Was News

I agree the photo is news. I can also see how The Pilot's hands were tied in some respects; they had little choice in the presentation, given the presumptive news value in today's unruly market.

But they did have some choice. I would have recommended a page-2/page-3 treatment.

What do you think "those young ladies can teach us"?

"What do you think "those

"What do you think "those young ladies can teach us"?

I don't know about teach, but they sold papers, and got the largest verified commenter responce to date. Was it staged ? Maybe, but I don't fault the Pilot's part in putting it on the front page, they have a payroll to meet.

Unclutch your pearls, please

"...glamorizing this moment to highlight a social issue takes away from the hundreds of other sailors who returned that day." Really? I'll bet you wouldn't say that if the kissing couple had been heterosexual. How many times has the Pilot spotlighted hetero couples and their families at Navy homecomings - new babies, marriage proposals, kids watching for Daddy (never Mommy, interestingly enough) - and nobody's complained about it "taking away" from the other sailors? If these women are willing to fight for your freedom to live as you choose, your bigotry shouldn't be a reason to deny them the freedom to live as THEY choose.

Women were fighting for their right not to be condemed by sexual exploitation.... Fast forward to today and now we are condemned by not supporting it.

Divorce is over 50%, there are more single mothers in the work place than married ones, and religion is almost an after thought....

Merry Christmas Virginians!! Oops... am I going to be badgered for saying that?
