The second-ranking officer on the Norfolk-based amphibious transport dock New York has been removed for an "unduly familiar" relationship with a female member of the ship's crew, the Navy said Thursday.
Cmdr. John Pethel, the New York's executive officer, received a punitive letter of reprimand, a nonjudicial punishment, Wednesday for a violation of military law known as fraternization, the Navy said.
He has been reassigned to the staff of the commander of Naval Surface Force, Atlantic.
Pethel was removed from his position Nov. 21 by Capt. Mark Scovill, commander of Amphibious Squadron 8, during an investigation into allegations of misconduct, the Navy said.
Pethel had been executive officer of the New York since January. Lt. Cmdr. Ethan Mitchell has taken over the position.

Not so smart
Fraternization rules have been around ever since the military started having women in the military. They're nothing new, but for some reason, some guys and gals can't seem to understand it and keep control of their hormones. Maybe the military needs to re-emphasize the fraternization rules and the consequences of violating them with ALL personnel in uniform. Maybe that would stop this sort of foolishness.

Fraternization Rules...
have been around a lot longer then women in the military. In older times, fraternization referred to officers not being buddies with enlisted or senior non-coms with junior enlisted. Allowing women to serve just broadened the scope of fraternization rules to include male-female relationships.
Number 25 and counting; 9 days to go
Record is 26 commanders and above relieved of duty in 2003.
Alternative Punishment
It’s bound to happen. Instead of ruining careers and wasting funds on training, send the senior one packing to another command and slap a two year delay on any future advancement. I expect that we’ll now see variations of this behavior with the new policy so new punishment solutions need to be developed.
P.S. Why is it that one can be openly gay and display their “orientation” but if I display my political orientation, opinions, likes or dislikes, I’m breaking the rules. Amiss?
apples and oranges
Because displaying contempt for superiors is covered under Article 88 of the UCMJ and not related to sexual orientation. And in my 20 plus years heterosexual couples had no qualms about display their orientation when greeting spouses after deployments, display photos of their significant others or the offspring. Grow up or get out.
PS..................why?
Because if you could be as open about how you felt about things, it would be offensive to say the newly accepted gays that are so overly sensitive to such personal views and opinions. We can't step on anyone's toes and hurt their feelings now can we?
who gonna steer the ships
Hey who gonna steer if all these cats keep getting reassigned to the staff over there at HQ. It must be gettin crowded over there about now.
With all that fraternizing going on they probably were'nt doing much steering anyhow.
interesting

The New Navy
Male and female relationships are grounds for dismissal. Female and female relationships are historic and celebrated. Welcome to the new liberal navy. Comming up next- ships will not be allowed to operate when fish are spawning.
