VIRGINIA BEACH
The Navy will hold an emergency response drill Thursday involving a simulated jet crash near Old Pungo Ferry Road in Virginia Beach.
The drill will involve Oceana Naval Air Station and the cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. It's meant to help train the cities' emergency responders in case a jet from Oceana ever crashes off base.
A fake downed jet will be set on fire in a controlled setting in the parking lot of the old Capt. George's Seafood Restaurant on Thursday morning.

This training must mean that there is a real chance
If there is a such a high likelihood that one of the jets is going to crash that emergency response needs to be rehersed, then why is there an airbase in such a heavily populated area? What if the crash is into the theaters at Lynnhaven Mall or into the big Baptist church on Potters Road when they are full of people. What would that rehersal look like? There is risk in most everything we do, but just asking for a disaster is irresponsible regardless of the money involved.
Training
#1 There is NOT a HIGH liklihood that a jet will crash, there is merely the possibility.
#2 When the base was created, this was NOT a highly populated area. If you came here after the base, then move away.
#3 Would you rather emergency responders NOT train for accidents??????
ahhh, love the risk assestment in #1. If that is the case why
does the DOD have a requirement to keep people from living in APZ1, APZ2, CLEAR zones? They dont want people in those area but they recognize that it is within the police authority of the local governments if they wish to let people live there. DOD realizes that planes do crash.
Look at the story about daycare. Many are up in arms about 16 deaths in 5 years and question what should the state do. Everyday 33,000 - 100,000 people are impacted and potentially could have a plane crash. This is done everytime a jet takes off/lands. It is compounded with any FCLP/touch and go performed. Yet the state and LG ignore this safety issue even with the Navy warning them. Folks blindly accept that a plane CANT crash on them. But when it does, then what?
They couldn't find a 4000 sf foreclosure filled with
mannequins at a pretend "Holiday Party" to torch, and parked cars and neighbors up and down the blocked street to add to the drama?
If this is also to check response times from Oceana to a site
why are they using personnel from Oceana and not from Fentress? The likelyhood that the problem originated from FCLP or T&G from Fentress is greater. Yes, that location is also close to the Southern app/departure routes. When I see the Navy that far away from its bases performing training, I hope its because of land opportunity issues and not because they also think it might happen that far out and need to be able to respond to some remote area because of a crash by their planes.
If its an opportunity to work with the entities, why not do it at Fentress in the old WWII runway area. Still, this kind of training is a great thing to engage in. Both Navy and LG will benefit from this training event. Do it more often!
And the cities will not pin
And the cities will not pin the ejection seat either. We will have to.
well...
Fentress is shut down for repairs.
did they put those Fentress firemen and response folks
on unemployment during this 9 months? Just asking. Not implying anything. A training opportunity is a training opportunity. Don't slight them from a hot training evolution.
no need
Unemployment? Military personnel wouldn't get laid off because of the temporary closing. And the firefighters on bases are federal employees, not city employees.
