Newport News Shipbuilding adds $113.2M in Navy work

The Navy has awarded Newport News Shipbuilding a $113.2 million contract modification, exercising options to continue work in preparation for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79).

The Kennedy will be the second carrier in the Gerald R. Ford class. The Navy's schedule calls for construction of the Kennedy to begin in early 2013, with delivery scheduled for 2020.

The contract pays for ongoing design and engineering for the nuclear-powered ship and its propulsion plant through October 2012.

Newport News Shipbuilding is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc.
