NORFOLK

A city man was sentenced to 42 years in prison Tuesday for shooting another man to death after an argument at a dice game.

Charles A. Duynes was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted robbery and weapons offenses in the September 2010 shooting death of Christopher Wilson, a father of two boys. Circuit Judge Jerome James imposed the jury-recommended sentence.

Duynes, 31, was at a house party on Sept. 4, 2010, when a dispute broke out over a dice game, according to testimony. Duynes left the party in the 800 block of E. Princess Anne Road and returned with a group of friends, some armed with handguns. Wilson, 22, was shot dead, court records state.

James called the shooting arbitrary, senseless and cowardly, noting that the fatal shot struck Wilson in the back of the head while he ran away. "We all have to die," James told Duynes from the bench, "but not like this."

A co-defendant, Ricky Riden, is scheduled for trial this month.
