Ocean Breeze officials to build 'lazy river'

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

Ocean Breeze Waterpark officials plan to build a 1,000-foot-long "lazy river" by summer, a spokeswoman announced Thursday morning.

The 15-foot-wide lazy river will be built on a three-acre plot of land at Ocean Breeze and will include other new features such as a bar and grill, cabanas, restrooms, and a deck area.

Two former Six Flags amusement park executives bought the 19-acre landmark summer attraction for about $7 million in January and have added a multiple-slide complex and expanded the children's play area.

Spokeswoman Myra J. Wood wouldn't say how much the work will cost but said the lazy river feature was the most requested attraction from season-pass holders.

"Our season-pass holders have been begging for this for years," she said. "It's rewarding to share this news with them during the holidays."

Wood said the park doesn't disclose attendance figures but saw more visitors this past summer than in the same period in 2010.

In addition, the new enhancements will attract more people to the park, she said.

"This is a draw for tourists visiting Hampton Roads. It makes the water park even more of an entertainment destination."

Ocean Breeze, on General Booth Boulevard near South Birdneck Road, is assessed at about $6.3 million. The seasonal business employs about 300 people, Wood said.

wait, I'm confused

I'm confused...this private company will build something with their own money in VB? Without taxpayer funding? What a novel concept.

As a long-time resident

I'm very glad to see Ocean Breeze receiving a facelift. It has fallen into terrible disrepair and my family stopped going because of it. I would like to point out that about 10 years ago I contracted what my doctor suspected was a bacterial infection after scraping my leg against the wall of a lazy river in a different Virginia amusement park. I hope that the new management at Ocean Breeze will take the appropriate precautions to keep it as clean as possible.

Lazy river

Last time I was at Water Country on the Lazy River we saw a lady in a full Burqa float by, later we saw a diaper float by not attached to a child. Not hating on the lazy river concept just saying...

Concern

The diaper I can understand as a concern, but a lady in a full burqua? You even need to mention it? Seriously?

Oh,

stop Mr. President, it's just a joke! Tell me that you would'nt get a giggle out of seeing that? A sense of humor is important in this world of ours.

Many people do take care business in public pools.

Many, many people do take care of their business in public pools. That is why they chlorinate them. That is why smart people do not go in them.

If you build it

they will come! So nice to hear the taxe payes are not pating for something being built here in Virginia Beach....

Lazy River

The lazy river is the only reason why I go to Water Country USA. I'm so glad it will be on this side of the water for all of us to enjoy. I wish the developer would invest in Chesapeake and build a water park. It would be nice to have one close by.

How are they getting the

How are they getting the permits to build on or so close to wetlands? Everything in the immediate arae drains into Owl Creek. Most of what they are building is involves impervious surfaces. Oh, I forgot, the owners are developers who have a direct connection to Sessoms and Spore.
