Police ID Va. Beach baby who died with abuse signs

VIRGINIA BEACH

Police have identified a toddler who died last week in a suspected abuse case.

Kimauri Williams, 19 months, died early Nov. 28 in the Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital emergency room after his mother brought him there not breathing and covered in bruises, according to police and a search warrant application filed in Circuit Court. Later that day, police charged Kimauri's mother, Shaniqua Jones, 21, with felony child abuse and neglect.

Police also have charged Jones' boyfriend, 29-year-old Alvin D. Gatewood, with abuse and neglect of a child in the boy's death, Officer Grazia Moyers, a police spokeswoman, said. The couple shared an apartment on Pine Cone Circle, police said.

Jones and Gatewood remained in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond Monday.

A determination of the boy's cause and manner of death is expected to take several weeks, according to the medical examiner's office in Norfolk.
