An undercover police officer purchased drugs inside an Old Dominion University classroom and later bought an ounce of high-grade marijuana at a home near the school, according to documents filed this week in Norfolk Circuit Court.
A combination of drug purchases by undercover police and confidential informants led to last week's arrests of 10 people suspected of dealing marijuana, according to search warrants. Nine of those arrested told police they are ODU students.
Searches of four homes near the university and one in Ghent yielded quantities of marijuana, ecstasy and drug paraphernalia, court records state.
Two weapons - a .45-caliber pistol and a shotgun - were seized from a home in the 800 block of West 49th St., court records state. Police identified Daniel O'Neil Jr., 20, as a resident of the home. An informant bought marijuana from O'Neil three times with marked currency within the past month, according to an affidavit. Detectives also noticed that the house had heavy foot and vehicle traffic, according to the affidavit.
O'Neil has been charged with conspiracy to violate the drug control act, selling or distributing marijuana, and keeping a nuisance premises.
Another search warrant details an undercover agent's suspected drug buy from Matthew Monroe, a 22-year-old resident of University City. The agent bought high-grade marijuana from Monroe inside a classroom on the ODU campus on Nov. 8, the affidavit states.
A few days later, the affidavit states, the undercover officer told Monroe he wanted a larger amount of marijuana. Police say Monroe met the agent at his residence and they drove to a home in the 800 block of West 48th St. Monroe introduced the undercover agent to Daniel Lee Kelly, who sold him an ounce of pot for $360, court records state.
The agent recently made a second purchase of marijuana from Kelly with marked currency, according to the affidavit. Kelly, 26, and Monroe were each charged with selling drugs near a school, selling or distributing marijuana, and conspiracy to violate the drug control act. Kelly was also charged with maintaining a nuisance premises.
Police have also arrested Cody Etchill, of the 4600 block of Mayflower Road; Erich Monson, of the 1400 block of W. 40th St.; Dylan Tyson, of the 600 block of Westover Ave.; Alexandria Zakowicz, of the 600 block of Westover Ave.; Ryan Baltra, of the 1500 block of W. 49th St.; Kenneth Wilson, of the 800 block of W. 41st St.; and Ciaran Stewart, of the 1200 block of W. 42nd St. All are suspected of selling marijuana.

ODU
This kind of Crime going on at ODU and the Honest Man cannot carry a concealed handgun on school grounds. Shame on ODU...
Do you want this...
in your backyard? When drugs or other illegal deals are taking place in a neighborhood, what is attracted to it? Yes, druggies, dealers,or anyone else you don't want there are drawn in like flys to poop. For months prior we saw stories of college kids robbed, beaten,& homes burgarlerized in the community close to ODU. Now we know why! The creep, lowlifes, and druggies were looking for the local "stash house" in want of a cheap easy "score". Why have a job, and use the money made from said job to buy what they wanted. They would rather steal from someone. Perhaps the "bad guys" didn't know exactly who had drugs, but they knew the general area and worked it over! And that's why you had local crime near campus. Kudos to NPD on this I say.
Uh...Robert??
The samething is occuring in your neighborhood (possibly minus the
weapons).
You just aren't aware of it.
The "bad guys and low lifes
The "bad guys and low lifes knew where the drugs were- THEY had them.

I'm sure the reasons for crime in this area have nothing to do with a stagnant economy, lack of available jobs and prospects, a crumbling school system, and a reduced safety net. But hey, we all are shaped by adversity, right? Shame on the "thugs" for being lazy and not working hard enough!
You sound like a remake of
You sound like a remake of Reefer Madness. Get grounded.
HEY !!!!!!
When this story first broke, all the "legalize" it crowd were telling us how its only "weed" and harmless. Looks like its a bit more. As I said, its always more dangerous then you think.
The next step in this story would have been "locals" learning where they themselves could buy some weed. Next thing you know, those "locals" tell their friends, and ultimately these niaeve ODU kids find themselves being being robbed, killed or both.

Yes the article mentioned some ecstasy was found, if it had been more than a few pills we would have heard intent to distribute. Gun ownership in Virginia is legal btw. Please try again, and try not to embellish.
True Ed, Ownership Of Guns,
under certain conditions, IS lawful; gun possession, while in possession of illegal drugs, is NOT.
Here's a reality check for
Here's a reality check for ya Rooster, lots of Americans both smoke pot and own guns. Just like the era of prohibition we will be standing our ground, get off your high horse. Just cause it ain't your cup of tea you run around this board sounding like Carrie Nation. What's your actual beef with marijuana ? I'd love to hear it, outside of it being illegal and that makes it a no-no. Your posts allude to you drinking and smoking cigarettes, you can start with that comparison.
