Veterans and their families looking for assistance applying for federal benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs can now get help at a state-run office in Virginia Beach.
Gov. Bob McDonnell recently announced the opening of two new Department of Veterans Services offices, bringing the total to 22 across the state. The other new office is in Alexandria.
The Virginia Beach office is at Pembroke Office Park, 287 Independence Blvd., Building 2, Suite 120. The phone number is (757) 552-1884.
According to a news release, it will be staffed by Elizabeth Ann Bonin, who has worked for the state's Department of Veterans Services since 1997, most recently as a veterans claims agent in Norfolk.
Bonin will help veterans apply for medical services, disability benefits related to their military service, and pension claims. The department also helps individuals apply for compensation for benefits due to widows, widowers and children of disabled vets, and assists with applications for veteran home loans and death benefit claims.

State doing for free what private business do for a fee
I only bring this up because the rantin right hates to see government do things. I availed myself to veterans affairs in Norfolk and got excellent service, advise and timely updates. I would expect the Virginia Beach office to do the same. Things aint gonna happen overnight, but if you are due assistance it will be paid from the time the claim is filed. I would advise any veteran who has any questions to ask them. Certainly before I would go to one of those for profit assistance centers.
