Virginia National Guard unit heading home for holidays

Posted to: Iraq Military Virginia

It's official: They'll be home for the holidays.

About 1,100 Virginia National Guard soldiers, many from Hampton Roads, will return from Iraq this month thanks to the drawdown of U.S. troops, the Virginia National Guard announced Friday.

The first to arrive will be about 120 soldiers from the 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, 116th Brigade Combat Team. They returned to the United States on Thursday and will spend a week to 10 days at Camp Atterbury, Ind., before continuing on to Virginia.

The squadron is part of a group of 825 soldiers from across Virginia who mobilized in June for what was expected to be a yearlong deployment. When U.S. plans to leave Iraq were announced, there was a chance the troops would be sent to Afghanistan. Instead, they're returning early - but not a moment too soon for their loved ones.
