WILLIAMSBURG
Oh, it's that time of year in Colonial Williamsburg.
Folks talking about this weekend's Grand Illumination and the deals at Williamsburg Premium Outlets.
When asked, though, residents do mention the other subject that seems to appear annually like holiday wreaths around here: Should John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot President Ronald Reagan 30 years ago, be allowed longer visits with his mother in Williamsburg and eventually be released from the mental institution where he lives?
Locals point out that Hinckley already visits and that his strolls through the shopping centers don't stop the coffeehouse chatter as they once did. But the idea that he's out at all still bothers a lot of folks.
"I know that if I did anything like that, anything remotely close, I wouldn't be allowed to see the light of day," said Kenneth Roberts, who works at a tea store across the street from the gated Kingsmill community where Hinckley's mother, Jo Ann, lives.
"Some way or another, he should be sitting in an asylum for the rest of his life."
Hearings began this week to determine whether Hinckley, who shot the president and three others, should be allowed more time outside St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C.
When Hinckley, now 56, shot Reagan in March 1981, he was said to be suffering from major depression and a psychotic disorder that led him to commit the crime to gain the attention of actress Jodie Foster, whom he was obsessed with. A 1982 trial ruled that he was not guilty by reason of insanity, and he was transferred to a mental hospital.
The hearings in Washington are expected to continue through next week. Hinckley's lawyer has argued that his client is no longer dangerous, that his disorder is in remission and that he still takes medication but in low doses. The lawyer said Hinckley should be allowed longer visits and eventually be transitioned to living outside the hospital full-time.
Prosecutors, however, say that Hinckley has lied about his activities during his recent visits. For example, prosecutors noted Wednesday that Hinckley had said he was going to a movie but that Secret Service agents saw him at a store reading books about Reagan and presidential assassinations.
Hinckley lied, his lawyer said, but that does not make him violent.
The questions over Hinckley's actions are what trouble some in Williamsburg.
"Problem is, if he gets out, who is going to make sure he takes his medication?" asked James Stancil, who works near the Kingsmill resort area. "His mom? She's 85, 86. He might've been off of his medicine that weekend that he was supposed to go to the movies - who knows?"
Others wondered whether a compromise would be possible: Could Hinckley be sent to Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg and be closer to his mother?
Then there are those, the under-30-set, who know of Reagan, who died in 2004, but have never heard of Hinckley.
"He did what?" asked Michele Lutz, 28, who lives about 10 miles from Kingsmill.
She said that if Hinckley would remain under the watch of the Secret Service and that he wasn't a danger, she wouldn't have a problem with him being in the area.
"If it's his mom, I think it's important that he has a relationship with her."

get some perspective please
The man needs counseling, help and meds. and supervision for sure, but put in perspective what he did. He shot several people. No one died. The VP has a story today of a man getting 25 years for murder. Even without parole he will still be out in 22 years just for the "good behavior" 10% reduction in time, then he will be completely free. 22 years for Murder where a person is dead! Hinkley has been locked up over 30 years so far. He killed NO ONE. The man quoted: "I know that if I did anything like that, anything remotely close, I wouldn't be allowed to see the light of day," sorry but you would not only be out in the light of day by now, you would be free without supervision. Giving Hinkley occasional visits out of his lockup is fine.
Keep him locked up
People with mental problems such as his are never cured. They will always have mental difficulties and most likely, if given the chance, will attempt to kill again. This has been proven and documented time and again. The safest place for him and the rest of society is behind bars in a guarded mental institution.
History Lesson II
Truman attempted assassin tried found guilty sentenced to death, commuted to life in prison by Truman, commuted to time served by Carter after 29 years
Nixon attempted assassin killed self to avoid capture
Ford two assassination attempts both tried and sentenced to life in prison but both released after Ford’s death.
G. W. Bush Several incidents one attempt in 2005 assassin tried sentenced to life in prison
Unproved rumors of assassination Taylor, Harding
Numerous other plots foild and unproven.
What's my point? Mental illness is not an excuse or reason to release this man back into society. After 30 years in a mental hospital he has well learned to say what the self proclaimed mental health experts want to hear. Keep him locked up.
"self proclaimed mental
"self proclaimed mental health experts "
I'm willing to bet their education makes them experts, not some assumption they claim to be experts for no reason.
Don't wager the
Don't wager the ranch.
That's a bet you would probably lose.
Why do you have a problem
Why do you have a problem with people you don't know?
History lesson
Lincoln’s assassin killed while attempting to escape
Garfield;s assassin tried, found guilty, hanged
McKinley’s assassin tried, found guilty, electrocuted
Kennedy’s assassin: accused shot to death by civilian
Jackson’s attempted assassin, tried found guilty by reason of insanity – confined until his death.
Theodore Roosevelt attempted assassin tried found guilty by reason of insanity – confined until his death
Franklin D. Roosevelt attempted assassin (who killed Chicago Mayor Cermak in same incident) tried found guilty, executed
Ummmm
I wonder about the mental state of someone who knows that they are being watched by the secret service (I assume) and then lies about where they are going. That seems either crazy or stupid to me.
Time to let him go..
George Bremer who shot Governor George Wallace, was sentenced to sixty-three years in prison on August 4, 1972, later reduced to fifty-three years two months later. Bremer served thirty-five years and was released on parole on November 9, 2007.
Seems to me like Hinckley has served about the same amount of time. No one can guarantee that he will continue on his medications but mental hospitals release folks every day with no guarantee that they will remain on their meds. It's time to let this man out of the hospital.
Conrad Murray only has to spend 4 years in jail for killing Michael Jackson; Reagan lived...
No comparison. Hinckley
No comparison. Hinckley attempted to murder the president. Murray exploited a drug addict for money.
