VIRGINIA BEACH

Amerigroup Corp. is expanding to the West Coast, company officials announced Thursday.

The Washington State Health Care Authority has stated its intent to contract with Amerigroup Washington Inc., which will be based in Seattle. The contract is expected to be finalized by late February.

Under the contract, Virginia Beach-based Amerigroup would provide managed-care services for the government's health insurance program for children, for people receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and for seniors and people with disabilities who are not eligible for Medicare.

Amerigroup, a Fortune 500 company, also would participate in a Washington state program that provides subsidized health coverage for low-income adults.

The company coordinates services for people in publicly funded health care programs, serving about 2 million members in 11 states. Amerigroup expects to expand operations to Washington and Louisiana this year.
