Boys hoops: Great Bridge eyes Southeastern title

Posted to: High Schools Sports

Second-ranked Great Bridge has won six in a row and 10 of 11.

The last time the Wildcats lost was Jan. 10 against Oscar Smith.

"That game humbled us," said senior guard Taj Owens, "It let us know that we can't take off any nights or we could lose."

The Wildcats overcame that "wake-up call" and will try to clinch the Southeastern District title tonight against second-place Nansemond River.

Great Bridge has a two-game lead with four to play. A win would give the Wildcats a sweep of Nansemond River and their first title since 2000.

"Most people didn't expect us to be here," said sophomore guard Marcus Evans. "But we've been working hard and getting better."

In other districts

The other district races are far from over.

Norview and Norcom are tied atop the Eastern District and meet in the regular-season finale on Feb. 7.

But Lake Taylor and Maury are one game back with three to play.

Top-ranked Landstown is in position to win its third Beach District regular-season title in four seasons this week.

The Eagles (6-1) play Tallwood tonight and Salem on Friday. Both teams are tied with Landstown for the district lead.

Sharing secrets

Bishop Sullivan coach Chris Harris and Cape Henry coach Mark Hall communicate each week by text or phone.

"We share scouting reports on other teams," Harris said of Hall, who was his assistant coach the previous two seasons.

But there was one game last week that they didn't talk about. The two teams played each other Friday. The Crusaders prevailed as they upset then-No. 1 Cape Henry.

"This win gave us a lot of confidence," guard Vince Miles said. "But we can't act like we just won a championship. We still have a long way to go."
