Business burglaries continue near Virginia Zoo

Home and business break-ins are a constant. But this holiday season was especially disastrous for some small business owners.

One of the most recent victims is Heather Snyder, the owner of Absolute Style, a hair salon at 108 W. 35th St. near the Virginia Zoo. Her business was ransacked overnight on New Year’s Eve. A burglar got inside by throwing a brick through a side window, in plain view of Granby Street.

Among stolen items were three laptops, a flat screen TV, a nail gun, air compressor and about $2,000 in jewelry.

“It’s just disappointing,” Snyder said. “I’m just one person trying to do all this.”

Nearby businesses were targeted a week earlier. Surveillance showed the same man broke into O Jardim Brazilian Cafe and Let’s Go! Pet Care on nearby La Valette Avenue on Dec. 26 and 27, breaking glass doors to steal money.

O Jardim owner Trista Soave uploaded video surveillance onto YouTube in an attempt to catch him.

Snyder taped a photo of the O Jardim burglar on the front door of Absolute Style. It was taken in the burglary.

“This area could really be nice if the community pulls together,” she said.

Insider Job

I looked at the video and noticed a couple things. One was that the thief broke in at around 7 at night and then ran out without any cash. Then he comes back at midnight and knows exactly where to get the cash drawer in like 15 seconds. Second, why do you not have an alarm with cash sitting around? How can a business with a motion sensor sit for 5 hours with no cops showing up? Even if it is Norfolk? I would not be surprised at all if the person involved is an employee or former employee because the attack was too brazen to just be random acts of violence/robbery.

Your observation had me

Your observation had me watching the video as well. Has insider written all over it. Expect the cops to maybe intercede this in cell phone transcripts.

good observation

The video shows the burglar broke the window of the pet store and went inside but didn't get anything. He went back hours later and stole the cash. -Patrick Wilson, The Pilot

Install Bars over the windows and doors

Don't leave valuables in plain sight.

that'll be hard to do

...with a flatscreen TV on the wall

I'd live in Portsmouth

I'd live in Portsmouth anyday rather than VA BEACH. In spite of all the upscale neighborhoods in Va Beach, their crime rate is just as bad as any other city in Hampton Roads. Va Beach just manages to cover up their criminals in the woods along the interstate. At least in Portsmouth, you know where they are and can avoid them.

You Know Where They Are?

How do you know where the criminals are in Portsmouth? How can I avoid them?

is there an app for that?

is there an app for that so I can map them on my smartphone? I'd like to know, also

smart ones have political offices. The dumb ones are in jail.

This Is A Real Shame

The police can't be everywhere, but it seems like the neighborhood snitches will know what going on and who is doing all of this. Small businesses can't afford to be ruined by hoodlums.
The Norfolk police will find them and too bad they can't do what they used to do to horse thieves!
