Celebrities among top givers to PETA

Posted to: Business Norfolk

Name three of PETA's top contributors. Hint: "The Price Is Right" B.D.C. (before Drew Carey), "Real Time" and Jack Donaghy.

The correct answer: TV celebs Bob Barker, Bill Maher and Alec Baldwin.

In PETA's recently issued annual report, Barker and the Alec Baldwin Foundation appear among 17 names in the "President's Circle," listing contributors who donated more than 100 grand.

Maher was among 11 in the next bracket, the "Vice President's Circle," requiring checks of $50,000 to $99,999.

Ingrid Newkirk, president of the Norfolk-based animal-rights group, had kind words for all three. Barker, who hosted "The Price Is Right" for 35 years, "is active from the time he gets up in the morning to the time he goes to sleep at night, helping in every possible way." Barker, she said Friday, recorded two TV ads last year for PETA, promoting the purchase of "cruelty-free cosmetics" and discouraging visits to SeaWorld parks because of their treatment of orcas.

Maher, host of "Real Time With Bill Maher" on HBO, is "on top of a lot of the issues that we do," Newkirk said, including encouraging people to adopt, rather than purchase, animals.

Baldwin, who portrays network exec Jack Donaghy on NBC's "30 Rock," has lobbied to ban horse-drawn carriages in New York, she said.

What does PETA really want?

I wonder which of these the celebrities agree with:

Animals Are Not Ours to Eat
Animals Are Not Ours to Wear
Animals Are Not Ours to Experiment On
Animals Are Not Ours to Use for Entertainment
Animals Are Not Ours to Abuse in Any Way (in any of the above listed ways)

I'm no celebrity but I support PETA

The good work this organization does far exceeds the gimmicks they must use to catch an apathetic public's attention. I've been a member for many years and know that my modest contributions are being used to make a real difference in the lives of abused animals.

It's great that PETA has

It's great that PETA has lots of celebrity supporters to draw attention to the cause. When we were stationed in Virginia Beach, we used PETA's SNIP clinic for our cats' vaccinations. I love that they offer this valuable service to everyone. I'm sure the donations from the rich and famous help keep the mobile clinics running. Military families like mine work hard to make ends meet, and having a low-cost clinic in the area makes a world of difference for us!

Celebrities Love PETA

And for good reason. It's so encouraging to see that people with money and influence choose to use both to help the animals that others use, abuse, or brush aside.

peta has helped so many dogs and cats in Hampton Roads

I'm so happy to hear that these celebrities (who have the money!)are supporting this organization. I know several local people who have had their dogs and cats fixed by peta's spay/neuter clinic, at a low cost. This kind of work deserves strong financial support.

Kudos to these kind celebs

Thank you, Bob, Bill, and Alec for helping PETA make the world a kinder place for animals. We need more compassionate people like you!

Is it really any

wonder that goof balls with money support goof balls in a goof ball wacko enviroterrorist organization? I wonder if Bob or Alec knew that their hard earned money was being used to kill animals that were thrown in a trash bin behind some non-descript store. Doesn't Ingrid want to get cooked up into BBQ when she passes? Oh, here is my check.......NOT

Good for them!

It's great that so many caring celebrities support PETA. I know many other stars, including Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson, often pose for PETA ads and write letters on PETA's behalf. Hopefully people will follow their example and be more compassionate.
