Charter school in Corolla, N.C., wins state backing

Posted to: Education News North Carolina

COROLLA, N.C.

The North Carolina Office of Charter Schools in Raleigh has approved a new school proposed for Corolla that could open by the fall.

Members of the Corolla Education Foundation appeared before the agency Wednesday and received a unanimous vote to open a charter school in the Currituck Outer Banks community, said Meghan Agresto, an organizer of the foundation.

Waters Edge Village School would be the first school in Corolla since 1957 if approved next month by the North Carolina State Board of Education. About 30 students are expected to enroll.

For years, students have had to take a two-hour bus ride one way to the Currituck mainland schools or parents have had to drive them. Some have crossed the sound by boat to get their children to school.

Funded by the state, public charter schools allow for greater flexibility in course work and in hiring teachers. The Corolla school would cover state-required standard subjects while making use of unique resources nearby, such as the wild horses, the ocean surf, maritime forests and freshwater marshes.

Should be interesting

I looked at the stats for several charter schools in NC. They get about the funding per student as the rest but most soundly beat the state’s average in math and reading comprehension. One that didn’t had an average score of 67% in reading compared to state of about 80% but I won’t hold that against them. What was interesting about that was they had to average in 33% in the 3rd grade but that was >95% by the 5th. Looks like when they see a problem, they fix it. What a difference pay for performance can make.

Congrats and kudos to the

Congrats and kudos to the organizers behind getting this school approved.
Anyone who knows Meghan Agresto knows she has what it takes to help make this a tremendous success.

Why Not

Why not send them to the closer Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills schools? Currituck county could pay Dare country a fee to cover the costs.

Not allowed

We use to send our kids to Dare County schools and pay them per child, but Dare decided years ago that they didn't want ours anymore as they were growing in attendance, too. So that put a stop to that....
