Spontaneous combustion blamed in Chesapeake fire

CHESAPEAKE

A large brush fire at Higgerson-Buchanan Inc. in Chesapeake was caused by spontaneous combustion of decomposing organic materials, Chesapeake Fire Department Capt. Mike Thibeault said.

The fire, which burned for over four hours this morning, is now mostly out, he said.

Just after 7 a.m., fire crews were called to Higgerson-Buchanan and found a large pile of trees, roots, bushes and other land clearing debris on fire, Thibeault said.

Smoke was seen billowing on the I-64 traffic camera at the High Rise Bridge.

No one was reported injured and there was no damage done to any buildings.
