David Wilson going pro: some quick hitters

Posted to: NFL

The news Virginia Tech fans didn't want to hear took place today: running back David Wilson is going pro. Here's a brief I wrote for online.

I'll have more in a bit, but a few quick hitters:

* Wilson was there with his parents, Dwight and Shelia, head coach Frank Beamer, running backs coach Shane Beamer, former running backs coach Billy Hite and offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring.

* Wilson said the NFL draft advisory board said he was a second-round pick. He thinks he can improve that at the combine. "That’s always driving me," he said.

* Wilson said it was a tough decision. When he was writing up his prepared statement, he almost teared up.

* He read his decision off an iPad, by the way. Steve Jobs would be proud.

* Shane Beamer said contenders on roster to replace Wilson are Tony Gregory, Michael Holmes and recent early enrollee J.C. Coleman.

* Coaches can't comment on players not signed, but Tech has commitments from 4-star running back Drew Harris (Exton, Pa) and three-star Chris Mangus (Raleigh).

* Jumps and hurdles coach Charles Foster came in the back with some track athletes and wished Wilson well. He added, "You became an All-Ameircan with us before you did with them."
