DT Kwamaine Battle won't seek sixth year of eligibility; WR Danny Coale has Shrine Game invitation
Posted to: Former Hokies Injury update
Virginia Tech defensive tackle Kwamaine Battle, who has missed each of the last two seasons because of left ACL injuries, will not seek a sixth-year of eligibility.
The 6-foot-1, 302-pound Battle played 19 games in his Hokies career. He had seven tackles, including 1.5 for a loss, in 11 games as as reserve in 2009.
The Spring Hope, N.C., product started the first two games of 2010 but tore his left ACL against James Madison, missing the rest of the season. After rehabbing and practicing in the spring, he re-injured it this past August in a preseason scrimmage and was lost for the year.
Because he redshirted in 2007 and lost two other seasons to injury, he could have petitioned the NCAA for another year of eligibility.
In other news, wide receiver Danny Coale has an invitation to play in the Shrine Game. The all-star game takes place at 4 p.m. Jan. 21 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
It features seniors split into East and West teams and is a chance for players to showcase their skills for NFL scouts. The teams should be officially announced sometime this week, with practices beginning Saturday.
Brad Childress and Bobby Ross are the coaches for the game.
UPDATE: No sooner do I blog this that Virginia Tech tweets two more all-star game participants: right guard Jaymes Brooks will be at the Players All-Star Classic in Little Rock, Ark., on Feb. 4, and left guard Greg Nosal will be in the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 16.
UPDATE II: Virginia Tech sports information says safety Eddie Whitley is scheduled to play in the NFLPA Bowl at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Jan. 21, but he is still trying to get into the Shrine Game.
