EVMS receives $1.8 million grant to study obesity

Posted to: Health News Norfolk

NORFOLK
Eastern Virginia Medical School has received a $1.8 million federal grant to study how inflammation in obese people can lead to conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
The five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health will help EVMS researchers study the chemical reaction in obese people that leads to chronic inflammation in the body, according to a statement from the school. The immune system uses inflammation to battle infections and heal wounds and it subsides when it's no longer needed.
EVMS researchers, under the direction of Dr. Jerry Nadler, principal investigator for the study and director of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center, are studying the chemical pathway that causes that inflammation, in hopes of finding ways to ward off disease.
Obese people have much higher rates of heart attacks, and 80 percent of people who develop Type 2 diabetes also develop heart disease.
But not all obese people develop these diseases.

Don't know if this study is worth the effort or not However, If

we want to answer the questions about diabetes and other diseases we have to start to unravel the mysteries of how the body regulates and repairs itself through the use of various hormones released by the body. We know that the body releases various hormones to control how the body sets it's metabolism. Once the body has a set metabolism it is very difficult to change hence those that do loose weight usually regain it. We still don't understand exactly how the body regulates metabolism. We don't know exactly how the body does repair work. If and when we finally understand these internal body regulation mechanisms I believe we will begin to understand how to combat an entire host of maladies from cancer to dementia to diabetes.

If people are more obese now than they used to be

It's pretty clear that the answer is in the food we eat, and the exercise we lack.

This will get negged because the truth is, that people have become lazy, over stressed, less able to provide for themselves (i.e garden, hunting, fishing), and they do not have the money to purchase the more healthy foods.

The problem isn't the gene; the problem is the evolution and fast pace of technology, and the inability for humans to keep up in a healthy way.

The average person, works too much, doesn't have time to take care of themselves, their over stressed, their under appreciated, poorly paid, and they do not have easy access to healthy activities and food.

With inflation adding to the problem, it is only going to get worse.

Grant

Hmmm....so if a 1.8 million dollar grant could help develop medicines that could cure or better manage (cheaper) diabetes, which in turn would SAVE MILLIONS of dollars from being spent on folks w/ diabetes who use Medicaid/Medicare (or who dont have health insurance at all and end up in ER's & then don't pay their bills).....sounds like an investment!

Federal money

Easy come; easy go.YouOu want to cut the budget to start saving money--here is a great place to start.

How much are they paying the Guina Pigs

for this redundant study?? How does one qualify?? Where do they go to sign up?? Free Easy Cheap Money to be made. This is just another boon-doggle on our federal money, ask any certified, degreed dietician, nutrionist, Weight Watchers, Jennie Craig about this inflamation and they already have the answer and cure for a lot less money. Water Retention is real, caused by a myriad of Human behaviors. Stop the waste of Tax Payer Monies. But, if jobs are created, 'Guina Pigs' - go for it..

1.8M to study fat people...are you serious?

This is rediculous! It doesn't take 1.8M to determine why people are FAT. Most families today do not eat dinner together, cook, they eat processed and fast foods and lack exercise (LAZY). Look at today's grocery store, when you go shopping stay to the outside because everything in the middle is bad for you. You have your fresh produce on one side and your frozen vegetables and dairy products on the other. Stay away from the processed high sodium no vitamin enriched foods and grow your own garden for a healthy salad. I have had my sons friends over for dinner and I am amazed at the kids that don’t eat BBQ chicken and veggies “I only eat nuggets and macaroni.” I find it hilarious when someone orders a Supersized Value Meal and a Diet Coke.

Read for comprehension

The study is to find why fat people get sick not why they are fat.

Best use?

If, as usual, MY money is burning a hole in the government’s pocket, it seems you could get more bang for the buck by spending this on preventing obesity.

True

Pay me the $1.8 mil to spend the next few years walking around the local malls and airports and slapping the Cinnabon buns out of people's hands.
