Ex-official to return as Norfolk's assistant city manager

Posted to: Local Government News Norfolk

NORFOLK

Ron Williams Jr. has been hired as an assistant city manager, according to an email sent to City Council members.

Williams worked for the city for eight years before leaving in October 2010 to become a senior project manager for Architectural Graphics Inc. in Virginia Beach.

Williams previously served as Norfolk's budget director, a special assistant to the city manager and director of intergovernmental relations. He was the city's primary lobbyist in Richmond for much of his time with Norfolk.

Williams begins work on Tuesday, according to an email sent to council members by city public relations manager Lori Crouch.

Williams, the son of Suffolk Treasurer Ron Williams Sr., replaces Melanie Purcell, who was dismissed in late November.

now we know

Now we know why Purcell was let go for no given reason.

VP Please...

Will the Pilot report Ron's salary soon? I for one want to know how much of a burden is now being placed on the dear sweet citizens of the City of Norfolk and since we obviously have so much money to give away, why not help out some of the citizens of Norfolk rather than poor mismanagement. Hey, at least we aren't being asked to pour money into a hotel next to the convention center...but we've been asked to pour money into everything else in the city.

City Manager Salary -- Your tax dollars hard at work!

You do the math...

Norfolk VA City Manager, Marcus Jones $20,000.00 per/mo $240,000 per/yr (employment package)

California Governor Jerry Brown $17,681.56 per/mo $212,179 per/yr (employment package)

California Attorney General $15,358.43 per/mo $184,301 per/yr (employment package)

Virginia Governor Salary $14,580.00 per/mo $175,000 per/yr (employment package)

California Lieutenant Governor $13,261.17 per/mo $159,134 per/yr (employment package)

Let's hope it's greater....

….than they were paying her. Maybe that way it'll embarrass the “leaders” into doing something, other than paying lip service, about raises for emergency services employees.

Low pay and a failure to at least try to help their employees keep up with inflation is one reason two cops, one a Sergeant, tried to arrest someone for “Unlawful Filming”. While it was funny if one wasn't personally involved, imagine a paramedic botching something up when your life depends on it.

The producers of Norfolk bearing the financial burden deserve better than paying the tab for this sort of cronyism.

Ron Williams

You people can say what you want about Norfolk, but bashing Ron Williams or suggesting he is unqualified is unfair. Ron was the City's lobbyist during a time that the GA basically declared war on cities (reducing their ability to generate revenue and severely restricting their powers) and fought tooth and nail for the city in Richmond. Ron became ACTING budget manager when Marcus was promoted to ACM and was then officially appointed to the position due to his competent stewardship of the budget process. Marcus inherited the problems you all like to rehash over and over again as well as a declining tax base. Give him a chance and let him build his team. Ron was doing just fine in the private sector BTW - we're lucky to have him back.

Norfolk City Manager Salary

You do the math...

Norfolk VA City Manager, Marcus Jones $20,000.00 $240,000 (employment package)

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger $17,681.56 $212,179

California Attorney General $15,358.43 $184,301

California Lieutenant Governor $13,261.17 $159,134

Why does an assistant city manager

need to build a team? The team (i.e., department heads and other city leaders) should already be in place.

team?

is a team needed in this context so they do not rat each other out?

I wish.....

I wish people commenting on Norfolk's problems would quit mentioning Virginia Beach. Crooked? Based on what? And why bring up Meyera now? She worked hard for us.

Work on your own problems, yall, and leave Virginia Beach out of it.

Careful what you wish for

Bet the people of VB sure miss Meyera now.
