A free talk is scheduled Tuesday night on the possible risks to drinking water in South Hampton Roads from proposed uranium mining in southcentral Virginia.
Tom Leahy, utilities director for the city of Virginia Beach, will describe the latest studies on mining threats to Lake Gaston, a primary water source in the region.
The lake is about 100 miles downstream from a proposed uranium mine in Pittsylvania County. State lawmakers are debating this year whether to allow mining, which has been banned in Virginia for the past 30 years.
The talk will begin at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Norfolk, 739 Yarmouth St., near the Chrysler Museum of Art. It is hosted by the Hampton Roads Citizens Alliance, a coalition of social justice and environmental groups.
