Hokies get commitment from walk-on kicker Brooks Abbott

Posted to: Recruiting

Virginia Tech continued to address its kicking game Friday, adding a commitment from walk-on place-kicker Brooks Abbott. The high school senior tweeted the news this afternoon.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder is from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla.,  the same high school as Hokies offensive lineman Brent Benedict, a Georgia transfer.

Abbott is a two-star recruit, according to Rivals, which doesn't rank kickers. A few other websites do. Chris Sailer Kicking ranks him 18th in the 2012 class. The website Kohl's Kicking puts Abbott 24th, with this note:

"Brooks is definitely a prospect to watch. He has great tempo on his FG's, he gets great lift and hits a straight ball. His tempo and consistency need to continue to improve on KO's to really maximize his frame and skill. Brooks with some tuning could also be a top notch punter, he has a very fast and athletic leg, which he uses to create good hang time and distance on punts."

Abbott, who was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American game, had scholarship offers from Army and Western Kentucky, according to Rivals.

walk on commitment

I think its basically an understanding between the player/coaches.. if they enroll, there is a spot on the team. Good thing his parents have some cash, that out of state tuition is steep!!

Walk on

How do you get a commitment from a "walk on"?
