Don't look now, but something resembling sanity has gripped the Virginia Beach City Council.
Even the mayor seems to have come to his senses - catapulting him onto the front page - with his sudden decision to table a risky deal to build a convention center headquarters hotel.
This ill-conceived public-private partnership was to be rammed through later this month. Now that City Council opponents outnumber supporters, the mayor wants to put the brakes on it.
Quick, the sane majority needs to extinguish this deal with Armada Hoffler before it reappears in a slightly different incarnation. If history is any predictor, this interlude of City Council lucidity will be fleeting, so it's imperative that politicians take another critical step immediately:
They need to rein in city staff.
You know, those highly paid employees who too often seem to shill for developers while drawing paychecks from taxpayers.
Take Deputy City Manager Steve "Crystal Ball" Herbert, for instance, who declared that the $109 million convention center hotel project would "pay for itself."
Really, Mr. Herbert? What if it doesn't?
And will someone please explain when rosy prognostications became part of Herbert's job description?
If Herbert wants to dabble in predicting the future, he ought to stick a turban on his head and open a booth on the Boardwalk, where he can amuse sunburned tourists with his forecasts.
The taxpayers deserve better.
Fact is, the convention center business is in trouble virtually everywhere. From coast to coast, cities chase convention business with increasingly grand amenities and give away space and other goodies in return for jobs and visitors that never materialize. Not in the numbers projected, anyway.
Politicians are seduced into these speculative deals by projections peddled by consultants, hotel developers and - in Virginia Beach - by city workers.
Not just Herbert.
If you haven't visited the city's website lately, it's worth a glance for giggles. Be sure to click on the "Headquarters Hotel" icon on the home page. Once there, you'll enter a stunning world of spin.
Included in the Frequently Asked Questions section are preposterous promises about this wonder hotel - all presented as fact.
In two separate places - in boldface - the city declares that the hotel will either "pay for itself" or "more than pay for itself." Answers to other manufactured questions proclaim that the hotel will create 900 jobs and generate $88.7 million in new spending, and say that the project will create a "profit that will help pay for citywide services."
Seems to me, citizens ought to be able to go to the website and find unbiased, straightforward information. Not a sales pitch.
"If a financial securities firm or a bank made these kinds of misleading representations about a deal they were considering, they would be sued," declared Councilman Glenn Davis, who says he is deeply concerned about what passes for facts on the city's official fact sheet. "If that FAQ was accurate, the mayor wouldn't have jumped ship yesterday."
Davis has been critical of city workers who blurred the line between "passion and sales" and told me Thursday that he'll object to this behavior again at the next retreat.
"There's a fine line between being passionate about the city and applying spin to a project to get council buy-in," Davis said. "They started spinning this and that's not their role. I'm not happy with all the spin."
The City Council should put an immediate stop to it. Everyone in town is getting dizzy.

Bring it out in the open
Great article, we need to get these things in the public eye. Bring it out on the table for discussion. So many times I see the news media avoid talking about problems we have with our elected officials. They want to discuss abortion, Iran, "jobs". And, never get to the real reason for most of the U.S. problems. Bribes, donations are bribes. When are we going to put these guys in jail that have caused the financial depression we are in? Once again we see Wall Street at the top of the bribe list for both Republicans and Democrats. Of course the media is owned by the mega-corps that are running the country and do not want certain subjects discussed. But, I find your article refreshing.
I would suggest a pointed question be asked
of every City Council incumbent and/or hopeful: Do you see any circumstance where tax revenue can be legitimately used to entice a private business to venture its capital on a project that it would not embark upon on its own?
If the answer is "Yes", vote for the other guy.
lobbyists
have you ever seen a city that so feared it's citizens ideas that it has to pay to be defended in an online blog??
Prof. Harold Hill lives - he is selling new "Visions" : )
Frankly, it is comical to read the posts of these hucksters clinging to their debunked and phoney Talking Points as they chatter on in a futile effort to somehow try to sell this outlandish scam - the business lobby just doesn't know when to quit, do they?
Folks ... even their boy, Mayor Townebank has bailed on this ill advised rippoff.
Yet here they still hawking their promises of untold riches, low taxes, triple A bond ratings, and how failed "investments" are what made our city great. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Wadda ya expect? Mike is a Progressive that cast his lot with the Democratic Party & guys like Obama who believe taxpayers exist as sheep for government to fleece - and government exists to do the bidding of the highest bidders.
Well Reid according to
Well Reid according to Moribund Mike, it was Kerry's fault that the taxpayers read her column, had an epiphany, and realized they were getting shafted by this deal. It went like this. Once upon a time the VB scarecrows were following the Yellowmeade Road to the Emerald Sportsplex. The scarecrows were hoping to get a brain from The Wizard of Moribund. Suddenly they saw John Moss and came upon a VBTA meeting. There they obtained real brains instead of raisons. They learned that PPV's are not the function of government; public money has no business in private enterprise; a $67MIL taxpayer subsidy for a convention center hotel is a claptrap; LRT is a ripoff, and if returns are too rosy to be true, it's a fantasy.
Stay tuned for part two.
Witch of the West suffers from housing downfall
Near the center of the spiral from which the Yellowmeade Road begins we see the corner of the Double-Trouble Inn that fell from the sky and landed upon the Wicked Developer of the West (West New Jersey that is). His demise caused great rejoicing from the little people that inhabited the land. "Ding Dong the Twit is dead! Which 'ole Twit? The Wicket Twit! Ding Dong the Wicked Twit is deeeead!", the little people sang.
Glenda Dougherty, the Good Witch of the North smiled as she welcomed John Moss into the strange Land of Odds. It was called that because of all the odd predictions that were boldly pronounced by the Great and Powerful Consultant!; pay no attention to that developer behind the curtain!
Anonymous charlatans
Frankly, it is comical to read the posts of these anonymous critics with names they must have found in a comic book. Why would anyone take an anonymous poster, one who lacks the courage of their convictions, seriously on the garbage they post on this web site? Certainly is is fashionable to post anti government rhetoric, but these posts take this to an entirely new level. Having the fiscal benefit of the contribution made by the resort area to keep their taxes low, and further the fiscal benefit provided by other PPVs that have performed well to also keep our tax rates the lowest in the region, these posters feel absolutley free to bite the hand that feeds them. If they had to sign and stand behind their posts, would it be different?
If I ever ran into you on the street
I wouldn't have a problem telling you what a spoiled entitled elite brat that you are.
You clearly believe yourself to be more interesting and intelligent than you really are.
Pot meet kettle, Charlatans?
The word comes from French charlatan, a seller of medicines who might advertise his presence with music and an outdoor stage show; were you looking into a mirror when you chose that adjective? That is quite the
vessel of koolaid "ye" be drinking Mike Barrett.
