DARE COUNTY, N.C.
Lane closures will begin Wednesday at 7 a.m. near the temporary N.C. 12 bridge at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to install protective measures to prevent erosion.
Crews will place large stones and install additional retaining walls to prevent erosion near the south end of the bridge, a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation said. A crane will be brought in to help with the work.
Lane closures will take place daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and work should continue for the next four to six weeks. Flaggers will be on site to help with traffic control.
Hurricane Irene swept through Hatteras Island in August, breaking N.C. 12 into pieces. The temporary bridge reconnected Hatteras Island to the mainland on Oct. 10.

Are they going to put a toll
Are they going to put a toll on it?
Obviously temporary
My husband and I were on Hatteras the week after this bridge opened. Two things alarmed us: The pace of moving water in nearby incursions, and the action of the water on the 'banks' of the new inlet. It was clear that, as a temporary solution, that bridge didn't have long at all.
