HAMPTON

A Newport News man has been charged in connection with a crash on Interstate 64 that killed two people in December.

Jesse Leon Evans, 33, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, a Virginia State Police news release said. He was already serving time at the Newport News City Jail in an unrelated case when he was charged in the crash.

On Dec. 4 about 2:50 a.m., state police were called to I-64 near the Hampton-Newport News city line after a Chevrolet Tahoe drove east in the westbound lanes and collided with a 2004 Ford Taurus. Sierra Smith, 19, who was seated in the back middle seat and wearing a lap restraint, died at the scene. The four others in the Taurus and the driver of the Tahoe, Evans, were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Kimberly R. Brin, 17, who was sitting behind the driver of the Ford Taurus, died of her injuries the next day. Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt.

Early in the investigation, state police said alcohol played a factor in the crash.
