VIRGINIA BEACH

A former police officer was charged with an additional four counts of grand larceny in connection with the theft of personal property from a police precinct. He was previously charged in December with two counts of petty larceny.

Albert Leonard Mills, 56, was released on an unsecured bond after he turned himself in to police on Monday, a Virginia Beach police news release said.

Mills is no longer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, the news release said. He had been suspended in December pending the outcome of the investigation. He was hired in July 1995 and was assigned to the 2nd Precinct Patrol Division.

Police have not indicated what was stolen, but said all but one piece of property belonged to fellow police officers. One item stolen belonged to the city.

Mills was initially charged in December following a week-long investigation.
