That'll teach them not to miss a meeting.
The NCAA slapped Old Dominion athletic director Wood Selig and football coach Bobby Wilder with a $1,000 fine each for missing a pregame meeting on the eve of the Monarchs' second-round playoff game at Georgia Southern in early December.
Selig and Wilder were expected to attend a mandatory administrative meeting the night before the Monarchs' game in Statesboro, Ga. However, Old Dominion's travel party elected to stay the night in Savannah, Ga., which is nearly an hour's drive away.
Wilder chose to continue preparing his team while Selig opted to entertain a number of prominent ODU donors rather than attend a meeting at which ODU was represented by other administrators.
"We certainly respect the NCAA for following the policy as it is currently written for championships," Selig said in a prepared statement. "ODU was well represented at this pregame meeting with multiple staff members attending the event."
Selig expects the NCAA, which announced the penalty Thursday morning, to modify the rule for future events and added that the logistical circumstances of the game site were challenging.
"We felt our time was better served institutionally," Selig said. "We will work to insure these issues do not arise in future playoff situations involving ODU."

missing the point
The point is if you agree to participate in NCAA sponsored sports you agree to abide by the rules. No matter how trivial Coach and AD thought the meeting was they were supposed to be there. Violate the rules pay the fine. No questions asked
LMAO--They Had to Make New Team Take Thier Licks Somehow Right?
Aww come on they had 2 make da new kids on da block take thier licks & pay dues somehow Right? It sure wasn't happening on da field :-)
Just who do these ODU folk think they are, coming into the FBS and whipping up on everybody? Don't they realize they're a new upstart program and supposed to pay thier dues by being the floormat, homecoming opponent that everybody beats up on?
They got some nerve comeing to da CAA and scaring da heck out of Delaware (the prior year FBS runner up)plus spanking W&M, Richmond & JMU? Then making PLAYOFFS AND ADVANCING!!??
Shucks, What this 3-yr old team doing in playoffs or our playoff meeting anyhow? Tell ya what. Fine em for missing da meeting!! That'll teach them and put them in thier place. LMAO
Wow
Such arrogance from an upstart program! What kind of a message does this send to the the young guns? You don't need to follow the rules if they're "inconvenient??" How sad.
No rules for ODU
Sounds like the coach and AD are following the lead of ODU's president. Rules don't seem to concern him either. As head of the FCS maybe bribery is on the horizon again as ODU's leaders continue to embarrass the school with such arrogant behavior.
.... in this electronic age ? Really ?
What abt video conferencing from a remote site ?? Or Skype video. The hotel probably had Audio / Video equip for tele-conferencing. Driving from city to city is the old way of business. How abt face time with Ipad to Ipad for those not in attendance. NCAA get in the electronic age !!
Well Represented?
They were not represented at all. The rules requires the athletic director and coach attend the meeting. Lame excuses from both. There wasn't much preparing you could do by the time of the meeting. You would have come out ahead if you had gone to the meeting, because you lost the game and $1,000 dollars.
No Worries...
The NCAA will be gone soon enough.
ENOUGH
The time has come for ALL Colleges and Universities to resign from the NCAA and it's rediculous 900 page rule book. The ODU ruling is just one more example of the NCAA's total lack of common sense.
If I had a dollar...
If I had a dollar for every stupid meeting I've had to attend, I'd donate it to the ODU Dismiss Invites Simply and Soon (DISS) fund!
good response
I like ODU's response: accepting responsibility yet subtly maintaining the practical side. They may have broken a rule but they did nothing wrong.
ODU is truly fortunate to have a gentleman like Mr. Selig at the helm.
