New No. 1 boys team? Cape Henry

Posted to: High Schools Sports

For the fourth consecutive week, there's a new top-ranked team in South Hampton Roads as Cape Henry moves into the No. 1 spot.

The Dolphins (12-3) have won nine straight games, beating Hampton, Middleburg Academy, Williamsburg Academy and most recently Fredericksburg Christian, which was the top-ranked private school team in Division II.

"It's a great accomplishment for everybody and the Cape Henry program," said guard Devon Hall. "But we have to keep striving to get wins and get better as a team."

Hall also knows top-ranked teams haven't fared well. Landstown, Great Bridge and Norview all lost a few days after taking over the top spot.

"Being No. 1 puts the pressure on you from the standpoint that everybody is gunning to beat you," said Norview coach Jonathan Wilson, whose Pilots lost to Maury by 19 the day they took over. "If you're not playing on top of your game then it's going to be a rough night."

District races tighten

The Beach District could have a wild finish.

Defending champion Kellam, leading the district with a 5-1 record, controls its destiny. The Knights host Tallwood (4-1) tonight, then face Bayside, Ocean Lakes and Landstown (4-1).

Salem (4-1) lost to the Knights on Friday. The SunDevils were playing without second-leading scorer Divante Walker, who was in Charlottesville for a football recruiting trip to U.Va. (He committed to the Cavaliers.)

Green Run (4-2) is on the outside looking in but still has a chance.

Meanwhile, Norview is in the driver's seat in the Eastern District. The Pilots (8-2 district) have a one game-lead on Norcom. The two teams meet in the regular-season finale at Norview on Feb. 7. Granby, Lake Taylor and Maury are tied at 6-4.

In the Southeastern, Great Bridge (12-1) has a two-game lead over Nansemond River and King's Fork with five to play. The Wildcats swept King's Fork this season and play Nansemond River next Tuesday. If they win out they will clinch their first district regular-season title since 2000.
