Newport News police seek man in shooting case

Police are looking for a man in a shooting on Jan. 12 that happened about the same time that a man was beaten in the area of 18th Street and Orcutt Avenue.

About 5:45 p.m., a 64-year-old man was riding a bicycle on 17th Street between Wickham and Orcutt avenues, police wrote in a news release. He saw a group of four or five youths, age 17 to 18, who assaulted him and demanded money.

When the man said he didn’t have any, the boys beat him and stole his bike. The man was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

A few minutes later, a 21-year-old who was walking near 18th Street and Wickham Avenue was approached by several youths. He headed toward Orcutt Avenue but was shot in the arm.

The 21-year-old remains in a hospital, according to police. The 64-year-old man was treated and released.

In both cases, the victims said one of the youths had braided hair. The 21-year-old said the man who shot him also had a slight mustache.

The 64-year-old man said the youths who attacked him were wearing all dark clothing.
