No mandatory jail time for school assaults in Virginia

Teachers on the Eastern Shore won't get what they asked for: mandatory jail time for parents who commit assaults on school property.

Prompted by brawls at school athletic events, some Eastern Shore teachers asked Del. Lynwood Lewis, D-Accomack County, to file legislation requiring offenders to spend at least 30 days in jail. The House subcommittee on criminal courts denied that request Monday, unanimously tabling the bill.

Committee members said 30 days seemed too harsh. Virginia law only requires people convicted of misdemeanors to serve half their sentence. Lewis said he might rewrite the bill for next session. "I think it's a pretty widespread problem," he said. "It happens a lot."

No jail time - Fine them with liens

If a person or persons are found to be guilty of fighting on school property the solution is easy. Here are some options: Fine them, and I mean fine them. 1st offense $1,000. If they don't pay, take out a lien against their property, cars, boats, and driving license. Lastly, bar them from ALL school functions, PTA Meetings, Teacher Conferences, etc.

Idiot Administrators

Two high school boys were abused by paddling at NHS; I was one. I remember growing to hate the lack of wisdom used in punishing both of us by the school's vice principal in the late 1950s. Too quick to resort to a physical beating, Mr.V-P saw the paddle as a cure but it only angered me towards him, not the other kid. Now at 71, I know the V-P took advantage of us and used his position to beat us; he kept his long paddle next to his desk for easy access, which kept him a prisoner of his ancient thinking. Too bad we were too young to oppose him, but not now, he's dead and we're not.

Hmmmmmmmm

Not sure if I'm a good parent or not.....I don't attend school athletic events only because my daughter isn't involved in school athletics, but I was totally unaware this was a problem. Of course news reporting is not exactly a daily occurrence here on the Shore and the Pilot generally doesn't think we exist. I get more Shore news from the Maryland media.......
