NORFOLK
The hotel at the corner of Monticello and Brambleton avenues in Norfolk is having an identity crisis.
Most recently called the Crowne Plaza Norfolk, and also formerly the Radisson Hotel Norfolk, the hotel has draped a new sign over its old one - Norfolk Plaza Hotel.
It's not the first time that the more than 50-year-old hotel has used that moniker. Back in 2009, Radisson Hotels & Resorts terminated its agreement with the property's owner, and it was called the Norfolk Plaza Hotel before changing to the Crowne Plaza Norfolk.
The hotel held the Radisson name for about eight years. It opened as the Golden Triangle Motor Hotel in 1961 and has taken the flags of Holiday Inn, Howard Johnson and Clarion over the years.
Raj Randeria, a partner in Aniesh Corp., purchased the hotel in 2008 for $10 million and went forward with a $3 million refurbishment of the 12-story structure across from Scope. The developer also demolished the hotel's two meeting-room wings.
Randeria did not return a call Friday seeking comment about the new name.

Hard to believe
At one time, that hotel was THE place for people to go in Norfolk. All the power brokers in the city went there to socialize. Now, it's just a dumpy hotel in a terrible location right next to the projects. It seems it changes names and/or ownership once a year. I'm surprised it hasn't just been torn down and the area used for an expansion of the bus terminal. It would be a better use of the space.
Location, Location, Location
In this case a horrible location
They did a lot more
They did a lot more advertising after taking on the Crowne Plaza name, I'm surprised the deal wasn't longer. Anxious to hear what happened!
