Norfolk teen gets 53 years for Lafayette Blvd. murder

NORFOLK

A young man convicted of gunning down a man in the middle of Lafayette Boulevard was sentenced Thursday to 53 years in prison.

Donate Morgan, 18, was convicted of first-degree murder for chasing and killing Courtney Craig, 22, outside a market in October 2010. Morgan also pleaded guilty to use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and receiving stolen property.

Morgan met Craig at the Tinee Giant near the 2000 block of Lafayette Blvd. around 10:30 p.m., court records state. The two talked briefly and left the shop together. Soon, Morgan pulled a gun and Craig started to run, court records state.

Morgan fired several shots as Craig fled down the center of the street, court records state. Witnesses told police that after Craig fell, Morgan stood over him and fired several more shots into his body.

Police obtained a warrant and also found stolen property at Morgan's house, less than a quarter-mile from the shooting, court records state.
