Flight activity at Oceana Naval Air Station this week - in addition to regular operations - includes F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets doing field carrier landing practice until about 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Landing practice on Friday is expected to wrap up by 5 p.m., according to Kelley Stirling, an Oceana spokeswoman.
Monday through Jan. 26, field carrier landing practice is scheduled to wrap up by 9 p.m., Stirling said. On Jan. 27, practice should finish by 4:30 p.m.
The increased activity at Oceana is a result of the temporary closure of Fentress Auxiliary Landing Field in Chesapeake, where jet pilots usually practice touch-and-go landing maneuvers. Fentress is undergoing repairs until August or September.
Jets also will continue to leave from and return to Oceana on training missions over the Atlantic and to the bombing range in North Carolina. As a Navy master jet base, Oceana has no restrictions on its airspace or its operating hours.

It could be worse....
If you think the jets are annoying, just be glad you don't live near a USMC Osprey base.
I want the sound of freedom from intrusive jet noise!
Jet noise isn't the sound of freedom. It is the sound of intrusion. I'm a medical doctor. If I'm called about a patient at home, it would be nice to be able to hear the nurse. If you were the patient about whom I am trying to listen, I'm quite certain you too would be opposed to the jet noise! Thank you.
Enjoy your "Sound of Freedom"
So very glad to have been able to move away from an apartment in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach and able to purchase a comfortable home very near Town Center! What a difference being able to enjoy a phone conversation without having to ask "can you hold a minute, because there are jets overhead and I can't hear you" and what a pleasure to be able to relax in my back yard and enjoy some peace and quiet which by the way is the real sound of freedom. As I've said in the past, let's have police cars drive about with their sirens wailing all day and we can call that "the sound of civility!" Nope, don't miss the intrusive noise one bit!
Jets
I live in West Neck area. Yes, the sound of jets is the sound of freedom. However, when we get the jets flying over our homes starting at 9:00 or 10:00 PM and flying till 1:00 or 2:00 AM, we are suppose to just deal with it. Now, other areas of VIrginia Beach have to deal with the noise and they don't like it. I'm glad Fentress is closed for a while, because I hope to sell my home and move to Chesapeake to get rid of the noise.

we moved away from Hampton Roads
We left the military area after 911. My husband is a vet but I complain in Nelson County about the jets buzzing us 4-10 times a week in 2's and sometimes 3's. They BUZZ even our schools all day doing training. No one listens to our complaints and we see the pilots JUST ABOVE OUR TREE TOPS all the time. It's not the sound of freedom when I have to constantly cover my ears and it scares all the animals. Kids complain at all schools. We try to get used to it, but we do get scared every time we hear/see them wondering if they are defending us and then remembering, OH, they are training again. No one said I was moving into this kind of ZONE when I bought my property here, at least you all are warned. Who compensates all of us in Central Va.
Ummm actually...
If you look at any aviation chart you will see that what you are complaining about are published military operating areas or MOA's that have published low altitude training routes. We used to call them " oil burner " routes.
There are many of these in Virginia and North Carolina.
I would be happy if the jets stopped flying at 10 pm
instead of flying into the morning hours. I even have triple pane replacement windows and still can not sleep some nights. Also, I did not think jets were to practice during Sunday morning church hours.
Sounds of Freedom
I too live in a secondary noise zone and can honestly say, I don't mind the extra "noise" a bit. This "noise" is the sound of freedom. I consider myself lucky to be able to sit on my back deck and watch the planes in action. In my own opinion they can fly as late as they want...no one will be complaining if they ever have to turn practice into reality and protect our country.
I have no idea what a secondary noise zone is but if
you can sit on your back deck and enjoy the jets you are not in a noise zone. Even the lowest noise zone, which is an average over 24 hours and not the sound a jet makes while over head, you are not in a noise zone. No wonder it dosnt bother you. Wait until the F-35's arrive and you are moved into a high noise zone as 100,000 in Virgina Beach were with the arrival of the F-178's.
