Pilot publisher up for HUD post discloses earnings

Posted to: Business Federal Government News Norfolk

Maurice Jones, the publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, received $725,570 in salary and bonuses during a 21-month period in 2010 and 2011, according to a federal disclosure form connected with his nomination for a position in President Barack Obama's administration.

Obama nominated Jones in September as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee backed Jones in a unanimous voice vote in mid-December. Jones' only remaining hurdle is approval from the Senate, which will reconvene next week after its winter break.

Details of Jones' financial disclosure form were highlighted in an article Thursday in The Washington Times. Jones, publisher of The Pilot since April 2008, said he could not comment because the housing department requests that nominees not speak with the media before they are confirmed.

In the form, Jones, 47, listed his salary from Jan. 1, 2010, through Oct. 4, 2011, as $462,500. He also received bonuses totaling $263,070. His salary and bonuses combined averaged to about $34,550 a month, or nearly $415,000 a year.

For Southern newspapers with circulations between 100,001 and 240,000, the average compensation for a publisher, including bonuses, was $464,602 last year, according to a survey by the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association. The Pilot had Sunday circulation of 176,054 as of September.

Jones' boss, Mike Abernathy, president of Landmark Publishing in Shelbyville, Ky., said: "He's paid in the same range of other people in the industry with the same level of responsibility."

Jones has said The Pilot remains profitable, though he has declined to provide figures, and has a bright future. However, Pilot Media, which includes The Pilot and other businesses, eliminated more than 50 jobs last year, primarily through layoffs and early retirement offers. Its workforce is now under 870. Like many newspapers, the media company also had layoffs in 2008 and 2009.

Sean Oblack, a spokesman for the Senate Banking Committee, predicted Thursday that Jones would be confirmed by the Senate shortly after it returns from recess.

"Throughout the nomination process," Oblack said in an email, "Mr. Jones has proven to be well-qualified to serve as the deputy secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development."

Kevin Hall, spokesman for Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, said Thursday the senator "remains a strong supporter" of Jones' appointment. Jones served as deputy chief of staff when Warner was governor of Virginia and as commissioner of the Virginia Department of Social Services.

Senate votes on Jones and several administration appointees have been stalled in a political fight between Obama and Senate Republicans, who objected to the president's decision Jan. 4 to appoint Richard Cordray as the head of the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau without waiting for Senate confirmation.

The White House has said Cordray's appointment was legal because the Senate was in recess, but GOP senators argue the chamber was technically never in recess.

Jones' disclosure form listed assets including $500,001 to $1 million in holdings in Landmark Media Enterprises, which owns The Pilot. Jones reported $150,000 in income from his equity investment in Landmark during that period.

At a time when the company

At a time when the company is losing business, people can't get their papers on time, cancelled subscriptions are at an all time high, this guy gets a bonus, and for his poor ability to get this paper delivered on time, he gets a hugh bonus? And this from paper that supports the OWS crowd?

Maurice Jones

Mr. Jones, remember the all hands meeting in which you stated the company has too save a certain amount of money before the year end of 2011. There will be sacifices, layoffs, buyouts at a time you are excepting a bonus. Shame on you for those who lost there jobs.

Just another politician

So, I see in this morning's Virginian-Pilot about the salary and bonuses and such of the publisher Maurice Jones. He got all that while he made his employees stomach days off with no pay, salary freezes and layoffs. This man is being considered to head up HUD in Washington DC, the home of many dishonest politicians. He ought to fit real good up there. I'm disgusted to say the least. My opinion of him was very high until today. Now it is in the comode.

down the drain

The paper lays off one of the best NASCAR beat writers in the country in Dustin Long in the name of cost-cutting,yet can afford to pay a suit three quarters of a million dollars a year. No wonder the newspaper business is on the brink of collapse. The paper has done nothing but cut quality content and size year after year, but evidently those at the top were spared any sacrifices. No wonder so many of us don't subscribe to the paper anymore. Those is charge of businesses are supposed to guide them to future growth and stability, but it seems our current executive class is interested in nothing but skimming off as much as they can for themselves, customers and employees be darned!

where is the occupy norfolk on this deal?

First I have to say I do not care how much a non government company pays its people. I just would be interesting to hear how the occupy Norfolk folks fall on this hometown big salary earner. I suspect not a peep.

Maurice has done OK for himself.

$725,570 in salary and bonuses ain't chump change.

Too bad about all those layoffs in the past few years and those yet to come, though.

Now, if Bain Capital had done the same thing to sustain a company ...

Sure am glad some of the

Sure am glad some of the overpayment regarding Maurice Jones is being made public. Too bad it can't include some others from The Pilot.

by contrast...

Meanwhile, the people who are truly responsible for putting the paper and other VPMC publishings out on a weekly/daily basis make a tenth of what Mr. Jones' bonus was. They also continue to be subjected to unpaid days off (despite no raises in years) to save the company money. And that's after laying of a couple hundred people. Hopefully those remaining people will start looking for better jobs elsewhere now that companies are starting to hire again and they have options.

Good Point

I know of at least one of The Pilot's most competent news professionals who is leaving for a better offer. There has been an incalculable talent drain at The Pilot over the past few years.
Mr. Jones is on another planet if he thinks The Pilot's future is
"bright." It is uncertain at best.

much happier now

I worked with some absolutely wonderful people when I worked under the VPMC umbrella. I was miserable with all the stress of that job and having to work a second job to keep afloat but I was surrounded by some awesome talent and friendship. Having said that, I'm now working for a company where the stress is NOTHING compared to what it was and the pay is much, much better. I very much miss the camaraderie I had with my "pod people" but I am so much happier now with what I'm doing it's hard to describe. I hope they can find what I've found.
