A 27-year-old man was charged Monday with felony child abuse and neglect after police say he left his three young children home alone while he went to buy marijuana.

Lennell L. Holloman, of the 100 block of Lee St., also faces a charge of marijuana possession. A police officer spotted a drug transaction taking place at the Wilson Pines Apartments on 2525 East Washington St., said Debbie George, the city's interim chief of staff. The officer approached Holloman and discovered 12 bags of marijuana on him, she said.

When Holloman was taken into custody, George said, he asked police if he could make a phone call because he had left his children, ages 4, 3 and 1, at home alone while their mother was working.

The children were found unharmed at their home but reported being hungry. George said they were placed with family.

Child Protective Services is investigating the incident, she said.

Holloman was released on a $5,000 bond.
