The Virginian-Pilot

This month marks the start of more intense jet practice at Oceana Naval Air Station. If you're wondering what's going on, here are some answers. And watch for weekly updates in Tuesday's military roundup in The Pilot.
Are we hearing more jets in Virginia Beach?
Yes. The airstrip where Oceana-based jets usually do field carrier landing practice - Fentress Auxiliary Landing Field in Chesapeake - closed for maintenance last month and won't be available until August or September. In the interim, Oceana's fighter jet squadrons are doing a lot of landing practice at home. During especially busy periods, squadrons may travel to South Carolina or Florida for training.
OK, so there are more jets - but why does it also sound noisier than usual?
Because they're doing a different type of maneuver: field carrier landing practice. This typically involves five jets taking off in quick succession. Pilots fly in a left-handed oval pattern, touching the runway and then taking back off again, eight times in a row. The 40 touch-and-go maneuvers that make up one "set" of practice typically last between 45 minutes and an hour.
That's a lot different from the take-offs and landings that usually occur at Oceana as jets come and go from training over the Atlantic and at North Carolina's Dare County Bombing Range.
Capt. Jim Webb, the base's commanding officer, said he hopes that the concentrated periods of landing practice will end by 10 p.m. most nights this winter - but that doesn't mean you won't hear or see jets flying later in the evening.
Jets also will continue to leave from and return to Oceana on those other training missions. As the Navy's East Coast master jet base, Oceana has no restrictions on its airspace, which covers a 4.3-mile radius, or its operating hours.
What's on tap for this week at Oceana?
Base officials say some of Oceana's 17 squadrons will be conducting landing practice this week, so expect concentrated noise until 10 p.m. Although intense activity should cease after that, jets may be flying 24 hours a day.
Where do we make complaints about the noise?
Oceana has a community concerns hotline, (757)-433-2162, where you can leave specific complaints about operations, including time and location and your contact information. Or you can send an email to OceanaComments@navy.mil. But the base's website notes that complaints won't alter flight patterns or change the hours of operation.
According to Oceana spokeswoman Kelley Stirling, the Navy investigates only anomalies - such as claims that a plane dumped fuel in a residential area or broke windows by flying too low.
You could also complain to Virginia Beach officials or federal legislators: U.S. Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner and U.S. Rep. Scott Rigell.
Whatever happened to the Navy's plan for an outlying landing field, where Beach-based jets could practice in a less-populated environment?
That's on hold until at least 2014. After trying for more than a decade to find a site in northeastern North Carolina or southeast Virginia where jets would practice carrier landing skills, the Navy halted its efforts to find a local outlying landing field last January. That's because it hasn't yet decided whether to base any of the next generation fighter jets, the F-35, on the East Coast. Until study of that issue begins in earnest - in 2014, at the earliest - the Navy won't resume its search for an outlying landing field for fighter jets.

Jet noise owns my LIFE!
This is insane and is now affecting my health. I am suffering from headaches as a result of this constant loud noise. In addition, I am unable to concentrate on school work or enjoy the television or telephone service I pay for. You want to take the base....take it! I have lived here my entire life and it has never been this bad. The whole idea that flying those damn things over the ocean is not even an option is absurd. Especially after they dropped one on a housing development. Get it together! Fly them over the ocean! I am desperate at this point. Does anyone with any power care? That's okay, thank God it is an election year!
close the base?
Why is it everytime someone complains about Jet noise we hear close the Base? Its like they hold this over our heads.. How about some simple regulations that protect our VB citizens health and quality of life? Here is my thing a jet flys over and its kind of loud but bearable. the next jet pilot comes buy with a heavy throttle and the noise is completely unbearable, deafening and can be scary at times having a jet race just hundreds of feet over head! I have a decibel meter and a usual jet that is bearable is in the 70-80 range I have seen readings over 120 and even 1 that was 140 which is deafining even with ear protection. How about having a sound limit and a height limit for these jets that they have to follow. I know my house is in a high noise
jet noise
Interesting article yesterday - at least we know now what we can expect and how we can register our complaints with the Navy. It's still like oil and water - jet noise and residential neighborhoods, etc. do not mix. I think a prerequisite for writing a comment about the jet noise should be to include whether you actually live in a jet noise area. It has nothing to do with patriotism and everything to do with quality of life. I have lived here over 30 years. The noise was bearable - never lasting a long time so it could be dealt with - not like now. I plan on keeping a journal of how flights and noise increase and then go to City Council and see what they have to say about it. Noticed good figures in paper for tourism dollars - do you think that thos
I rarly write about the noise, but about the inappropriate
actions of the Secretary of the Navy in not correcting or accurately portraying to the region the real problem that is impacting the viability of the east coast MJB. Instead of demonstrating the core values he expects of every Officer and Sailor, he does nothing to address the real problem. Oceana can no longer properly function as a MJB in a safe fashion for our pilots or the civilians living under those circles while providing our pilots with an environment that enables them to train as they fight.
This problem has evolved over the years to the point where Oceana will never be fixed because it is too costly. The only real solution is realign these planes to another east coast field and give Oceana a different mission. Will he do that?
This is a military town.
There is going to be added noise from our military forces when they are training and at work.
Besides, they sound cool, and they are fun to watch!
Not accurate
The pattern indicated on the map is not accurate just like the Fentress maps are not accurate. Most pilots do not fly tight ovals like indicated. They are frequently over my house in Chesapeake when they are supposed to be over a half mile away. At least I have peace till august!
Here's an idea.
Even with the depressed housing market you could sell your house and move to someplace where there is no jet noise and the cost of living is a fraction of the cost in VB. I thinking Iraq would be good for you. NO jets overhead but not much fun hanging around downtown and no cultural attractions.
Course, you don't know about a downtown and cultural attractions anyhow.
You just don't know
What it's like to one day NO JETS then the next day 16 HOURS of circles over your house because why? They moved these jets here knowing full well they practice over land. We got screwed. If you didn't good for you.
Own my home, 30 years, love the sound of FREEDOM
I am still amazed by the sight of the jets. The jet noise is loud, but I don't even realize they're there anymore. When I see them, I am so proud. They are majestic and the noise is a very small price to pay for our FREEDOM. Thanks to the men and women who defend our country, they have to prepare someplace, and I'm glad it's in my backyard. I can't believe all the non-stop bellyaching about it. Some folks need to realize where their priorities lay.
Your misrepresentation of people
"bellyaching" is unfounded. You know nothing of me or my family or anyone ele here commenting on the decision to practice over the city. The jets and VB have outgrown each other, it has nothing to do with supporting the military or not supporting our troops. If you're not affected by the jet NOise, then good for you.
