A rally and concert will be held Sunday at Old Dominion University to recognize what would have been the 21st birthday of a student slain last year.
Christopher Cummings was shot June 10 in his rental house on West 42nd Street in a case that remains unsolved. His sister, Kandace Cummings, organized the rally.
She said she wanted to celebrate her brother’s birthday “and let kids know that someone cares.”
The rally will be from noon to 4 p.m. in the Webb Center’s north cafeteria. Speakers include ODU President John R. Broderick and U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, who last year introduced a bill to create a campus public safety center in the Justice Department.
Rally sponsors will sell merchandise, with proceeds going toward a scholarship, a reward fund and the Remember Christopher Foundation.
The family is offering a $10,000 reward in the case and the 35th Street Merchants Association has offered a $2,500 reward. Additionally, Crime Line tipsters can earn up to $1,000. The Crime Line number is 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

I was sad to hear on the news that Chris' dad said he had shared a beer with his underage son. What a mixed signal that sent to Chris as well as the college students attending the vigil. It's ok to break the law- if it's for a good reason? That just leads to confusion in the young developing minds.
ODU Rally
Question: How many rallies have been held to celebrate other students and their birthdays? More than one has lost their lives in and around the ODU campus. Many students have even done remarkable things. Could it be that they were not as well connected? President Broderick has a history of pandering to legislators, and while this death was indeed tragic, ODU needs to use its time and resources to celebrate the good things accomplished by its students, not dwell on the negative. VATech had a tragedy that touched every student on its campus, and their administration used such rallies to heal. What is this one going to accomplish but to highlight one incident that is still under investigation? I was an ODU donor and am an alum.

The victim's on actions are questionable to me...were there drugs involved...this was a second robbery attempt or robbery that resulted in his death...what was so important in that dwelling to make someone come twice...Congressman or no Congressman as a relative...who are they really celebrating???

This is disgusting! He had roommates as well, so even if you, for a moment assume there were something there to go after, maybe it was not his...to be honest, even if it was are you insinuating that gave someone the right to murder him, or intrude in his home? You should be ashamed for this comment, hope it never happens to YOUR children.......

yes
Because what they need is a rally and not real security. They are straying off topic.
I
certainly hope that they can catch the low life(s) who killed this young man. The only thing worse then a crime like this is a crime like this that is not solved and the perpetrator is not brought to justice. Rest in peace.

Why you ask?
It's a rally held at the area's largest campus, with its president and a congressman speaking. It's also relevant to a larger community of people who live around ODU. I feel as if I am explaining something to a first grader. . . remember, just because you don't care to attend something does not mean that it's not news.
