Citing lackluster sales, Silver Diner announced Monday it has closed its final two Hampton Roads restaurants effective Jan. 1.
The outlets at 4401 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, and 12581 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, did not open for business Monday. A third restaurant, on Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake, closed in 2010.
Robert Giaimo, president and CEO of the Rockville, Md.-based company, said sales “never reached sufficient levels to make our stores in southeastern Virginia profitable.”
“Facing higher costs, coupled with the monthly losses we were sustaining, we could no longer continue to operate these locations,” Giaimo said in a news release.
Giaimo said employees affected by the closure will be offered jobs at Silver Diner’s 15 other locations, including those in Richmond and the Washington, D.C., area.
“The fact that we continue to do well in our other markets is encouraging but does not lessen the pain we feel for our managers and associates in Hampton Roads or for our guests who are losing a favorite dining establishment,” Giaimo said.
Silver Diner placed posters on its doors in Newport News and Virginia Beach alerting guests to the closings.

Crummy service is what I got
Crummy service is what I got the last time I was there, and, we never went back. As a matter of fact, every time I dine out in Virginia Beach I enjoy meals at home more. Even if it means massive amounts of dishes for special meals. Dirty tables, floors, and crummy service are the "norm" in this town. I've yet to find a nice restaurant in VB that I would recommend to anyone. And then theres the hair in my food. Those were especially fond memories. VaBeach is full of great patriots but we could be so much more. Everything is so below par except for our warriors (and beaches. Especially the ones we can't access in Back Bay).
Not surprised
I took my wife there for breakfast several years ago and they fried her eggs in some type of oily margarine mess which she refused to eat. We have not been back since.
I cant believe Silver Diner
I cant believe Silver Diner has closed. This was one of the only restaurants that served foods without artificial crap. I loved the Silver Diner. Some of the best breakfast food in Hampton Roads. And the place was always packed. No way did this place lose money. Something else must have happened.
Won't get any more of my business
We used to eat there at least twice a month if not more often. The food was good, but pricey for what it was. We've got gift cards for them too. I travel up to Richmond and the Baltimore area enough and I've stopped in at those locations before - but I won't now. If they're going to pull their business from our area, then I won't patronize their other locations - and I tell others not to go there too.
When a person thinks of a 'diner' you think of a small, simple menu that is well prepared and isn't expensive. The owners of the Silver Diner chain tried to twist the meaning of the word - and are losing out because of it. If they reinvent themselves back into the REAL meaning of a 'diner' they'll stand a better chance at surviving.
Silver Diner gift cards
I'd would strongly suggest selling the gift cards at ebay or another reputable site. Silver Diner is still very popular in Washington/ Baltimore. I got screwed the same way by that Outer Banks Seafood. I bought 2 $50 gift cards for family members and the one Richmond followed a few weeks later by the one in Va Beach.
I'm in agreement with a lot
I'm in agreement with a lot of other posters - the food wasn't that good at all, and instead of diner prices, they thought the were Blue Pete's.... A simple bacon, eggs, hash-browns with toast and coffee ran about twelve bucks....
This area needs another place like Lee's Diner used to be on Bainbridge Blvd in Portlock - that man knew how to please his customers.
Silver Diner
My obervation of the Silver Diner closing is amazment! It seems as though for the past few months that most restaurants in the Virginia Beach area have packed parking lots just about EVERY evening. It just seems odd that any place to eat, especially one that has been around for a number of years, just up and " shuts the door ". We've eaten at the Silver Diner many times. Found the food/service average, but then so are many other places and they're still going strong. Must be something to the story that isn't immediately obvious.

I will miss you!
Can’t believe they closed my favorite place to eat breakfast! Silver Diner was super clean, the staff very friendly, plenty of coffee refills and always had “extra” to take home. They even threw in a free paper. They knew me by first name and always had a cup of coffee waiting at my table when I sat down. I will really miss this place!
Pissed off....
Why were they pushing gift cards just days before Christmas if they were closing yesterday. My daughter and her husband ate here every Sat morning. We get them a gift card and they go out of business within a week.
