Sunday hunting passes Va. Senate, heads to the House

Posted to: News Outdoors Sports State Government Virginia

The Virginia Senate has passed Bill 464 allowing Sunday hunting on private lands.

The issue now moves to the House of Delegates, where it is expected to face a tougher battle.

The movement to open hunting on Sundays already has reached milestones, as similar bills in the past have failed to make it out of committees.

The passed Senate version includes an amendment that prohibits hunting on Sundays within 250 yards of any place of worship.

The bill passed its final test by a vote of 29-11.

While it faces a tougher test in the House, delegates are aware that Gov. Bob McDonnell has said he will sign any legislation allowing hunting on private property. And the state game department passed a resolution last year supporting a lifting of the ban.

"Personally I am ecstatic," said Curtis Colgate, a Virginia Department of Game and inland Fisheries board member. "I think a lot of rural senators recognized the issue that people should have a right to do what they want to on their own land on Sundays.

"I certainly hope the way this thing moved through the Senate helps its chances in the House."

Sunday hunting...YES!!

Hey Joe, you have enjoyed 7 days per week to do what ever you chose to do in the woods your entire life! My guess is, you have never set foot in the woods in your life! You simply do not like hunters or the sport, so, post your land, if you have enough land to turn a horse around on
and no hunter will invade your privacy...Period!
Wild game is SO much better and healthier than anything that comes from a grocery store, but you woulkd not know or understand that!

The first Sunday open to hunters

Give a beep beep in celebration when you leave the coffee stop on your way out to the field.

Hunting on Sundays

Yea put those over payed and do nothing game boys to work...

Freedom and Liberty

The real shame of it is that it has taken 20 years to reach this point. This issue is so obviously a property owners rights issue it just screams out freedom and liberty. If you don't want hunting on your property on Sunday then don't do it. When Ohio overturned their ban 5 years ago do you know how much strife and conflict they had? None

Give Virginians freedom and liberty to choose what we do with our Sunday.

Joe your comment " HUNTERS DON'T RESPECT " is not a fair comment! I'm sorry if you have had some problems in the past but don't form your opinion based on a few.. 99% of us are good people that just want to feed our family. Do you hunt Joe?

Sunday hunting

Hunting on Sundays would be a great thing!! 44 States have it with no problems. All of the old fear tactics used by those that don't want it are a joke.. I work 5 days a week and only have 1 day a week to hunt. I understand that hikers and horse riders want there time in the woods also but that has NOTHING to do with me hunting on my property so how is this even an arguement? Property owner rights should allow me to hunt on Sundays if I choose. Even on public land hunting season is only 3 months long. Hikers and horse riders have 9 months a year in the woods when there is no hunting allowed. They want there time it the woods? They have more time then hunters!! January-September so I don't understand their arguement...

Other users

Yep, other people arguing that you can't do certain things on your land makes about as much sense as saying who a person is allowed to marry. If you are flabergasted by public ignorance, imagine being gay.

No to Sunday hunting

Hunters already get 6 days a week including saturdays and almost all holidays. What about the rest of us that want to do anything else in the woods besides hunt without fear of being shot or screwing up someones hunt ? I dunno things like ride a horse ? Hunters have zero respect for property lines and our trespass laws suck and go unenforced.

Sir, if you are riding a

Sir, if you are riding a horse on my property you are trespassing.

Does the 250 yard exclusion

Does the 250 yard exclusion apply to bow hunting? Why is sunday singled out for the exclusion zone? Sounds like preferential treatment only for those groups that meet on sundays. could that be an endorsement of a religion?
I cant wait to have the choice to do what I want on my land when i want to.
