Two people were displaced Thursday night when a fire damaged their duplex on Big Bend Drive in Western Branch.

The fire was reported about 10:20 p.m. and firefighters had it under control shortly before 11 p.m., according to Capt. Mike Thiebeault, Fire Department spokesman.

A dog was found dead in an upstairs bedroom, but the residents were unharmed.

The other part of the duplex wasn't damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia helped the residents with lodging and food, according to Rob Shapiro, public relations director.
