UFL's Schottenheimer to interview with Tampa Bay

Posted to: Sports UFL Destroyers

Marty Schottenheimer said Monday morning he could interview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching job as early as Tuesday.

A report by Chris Mortensen on ESPN.com cited unnamed sources as saying Schottenheimer, who coached the Virginia Destroyers to the United Football League championship last fall, would talk with the Bucs on Tuesday.

However, when reached by The Pilot at his home in Charlotte, N.C., Schottenheimer said he and the Bucs had discussed a possible Tuesday interview, "but it hasn’t been firmed up. My plans are still up in the air. We’ll have some dialogue later today, I’m sure.”

Schottenheimer, 68, who has 200 regular-season NFL coaching victories, last coached in the league in 2006. He often said during the UFL season that he had no interest in returning to the NFL.

“I made that statement, and at that time I felt that way,” Schottenheimer said. "But by the same token, when there was dialogue about this possibility I said, ‘Hey, I don’t know.’ So I may go down and visit with them, if that’s the way it plays out. We’ll have to wait and see.”

The ESPN.com report said Schottenheimer is among a number of former NFL head coaches the Bucs want to talk to. Others mentioned were Mike Sherman, Brad Childress and Wade Phillips. Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray was also mentioned as a candidate for the Tampa Bay job.

Okay, and?

That's been the case in every job he's taken since Cleveland. Tampa had so much success with their young coach.

If he takes this job, he inherits a halfway decent young team. But it won't be a joyride playing Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Cam Newton.

Hmm

Guess if you do good in the minors the big league will come calling. Good luck with it Marty. :)

i thought we had a coach and

am disappointed to read this! Perhaps the Destroyers just weren't meant to be. Too bad!!

The Biggest Challenge...

The biggest challenge the Destroyers and the UFL have is money. The league has lost money from day one. The Destroyers put together a good squad and Coach Schottenheimer did a marvelous job of coaching them. However, the fact that the league started the season late, then had to cut it short for lack of funds doesn't bode well for a return to the field.
