U.S. weapons for future defense to include relics

WASHINGTON

The lineup of weapons the Pentagon has picked to fit President Barack Obama's defense strategy, called "Priorities for 21st-Century Defense," features relics of the past.

They include the Air Force's B-52 bomber, whose current model entered service shortly before Obama was born. There is the even older U-2 spy plane, which began flying in 1955 and burst into the spotlight in May 1960 when Francis Gary Powers was shot down in one over the Soviet Union.

When Obama went to the Pentagon on Jan. 5 to announce his new defense strategy, he said that as the United States shifts from a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, it will "get rid of outdated Cold War-era systems." He was not specific.

But when the first details of the Pentagon's 2013 budget plan were announced Thursday, it was clear that some prominent remaining Cold War-era "systems" will live on.

That includes not just the B-52 and the U-2, but also the foundation of U.S. nuclear deterrence strategy: a "triad" of nuclear weapons that can be launched from land, sea and air.

That concept, credited by many for preventing nuclear conflict throughout the Cold War, is now seen by some arms control experts as the kind of outdated structure that the United States can afford to get rid of.

Some think the United States should do away with at least one leg of that "triad," perhaps the bomber role. That would save money and clear the way for larger reductions in the number of U.S. nuclear weapons - an Obama goal in line with his April 2009 pledge to seek the elimination of nuclear weapons.

The United States now has about 5,000 operational nuclear weapons, about half as many as a decade ago. They can be launched from ballistic missile submarines, from underground silos housing intercontinental ballistic missiles, and from B-52 and B-2 bombers at air bases in Louisiana, Missouri and North Dakota.

The Air Force, which provides the land and air legs of the triad, argues for preserving that Cold War-era configuration.

"It remains our conviction that as you go down (in numbers of nuclear weapons), the triad actually becomes more important," Gen. Norton Schwartz, the Air Force chief of staff, told reporters Friday. "The diversity, the variety, the attributes associated with each leg of the triad reinforce each other to a greater degree."

The B-52 has been modernized many times and is now used in a variety of roles, including close-air support of troops in conflict, and it can carry missiles, bombs and mines.

The land-based intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) force dates to 1959. Ballistic missile subs, known as "boomers," were launched in 1960; the current Ohio-class fleet dates to 1981.

The administration is nearing completion of an internal review of how many nuclear weapons are required to meet today's security needs; that process will lead to decisions on whether to reshape the nuclear arsenal.

The only move the Pentagon is making on the nuclear weapons front in the 2013 budget is a proposed two-year delay in development of a new generation of submarines to replace those now equipped with Trident nuclear missiles.

right sizing the military

The biggest mistake America can do with its military is to not update it and change it as warfare changes. The greatest way to ensure losing the next one is to prepare to fight the last one. History has proven this time and again.

Note these changes are being called for by the Pentagon, the people that we are PAYING and trusting to defend of our country against all threats, especially future ones. A guaranteed way to foul up their efforts is to let politicians try and tell them how to do their job.

It is easy to understand..

why 'Cold War era' systems and platforms are relevant in today's warfare environments. Many of them were constructed to engage in the absolute worst case scenarios, like those of nuclear combat. Size and long range was not just for reaching targets, but an acknowledgement that the ability to refuel and resupply might be impacted. The weapons and sensors are so advanced now that it is getting to the point where it doesn't matter how they are delivered, they just need to get into the general area and allowed to 'do their thing'. 'Tactical air support' requirements especially have been altered, no longer are dedicated planes needed to 'get in the dirt' to drop ordnance, a single large carrier can handle those missions now over a wider front.

The military

has no role in the grifter in chiefs appeasment style administration. The military is declining under his stewardship. Moral is low, people being forced out due to the grifters policies. Obama would rather trade prisoners with the taliban and fall for Irans tricks. He abandoned Iraq an allie to fend for themselves and now look what is happening. All the previous 8 years efforts gone to waste virtually overnight. How did we end up with this sorry excuse for a president? I wish people would study and research all the promises this grifter made and compare it to what he has accomplished. Obama is a failure. He will propose anything to sound good with no intention of following through. No ideas no leadership. Lets send this uppity grifter home.

Active and retired military (me) , you are reading this and

wondering, what is this socialist of a president thinking? Our freedom stems from the ability to defend ourselves so vigorously that no country would challenge us. Since 911 any country harboring muslim fascists out to attack us are aware what would happen to them if they allowed it. But along comes obama and says, "hey, we're weak now, we won't/can't strike back, c'mon smack us around. I won't do anything." As he is socialist and is only concerned w/ buying votes, what better way to do it than gut the conservative filled military and use the funds to buy/steal an election. His allowing old military hardware to be used by our modern military for our great nations defence just proves his disdane for the country's security. Thanks GS obama.

I was wondering,

Do you work for a defense contractor? President Obama is looking at a balance of forces the country can afford. I realize, for most conservatives no amount of military is enough! But, in the real world we simply do not need a "Cold War" military. Closing overseas bases that are left over from WW2 is a good idea! Policing the entire world is not the job of the US Military. I am tired of hearing the right wing rant every time a reduction in the DOD is suggested. If you are going to refuse to increase any taxes to support the bloated military establishment you are going to live with a leaner (and more capable) Military.

Nope, not a contractor, just a SFC who's been down range twice

and has seen the Carter and Clinton military first hand. Weak and underfunded. But since we all have to tighten our belts, houz bout them socialist ripoffs of hard working Americans, namely welfare, especially to illegals and the General Secratery in the WH squandering billions on bankrupt companies. Maybe we can save a few bucks if his lib senate would get a budget passed that actually made sense to the American people so we wouldn't have a 16,2Trillion defecit? Libs hate the military, so always gut it first. Let's try gutting some of these other lib boondoggles first before we cut the one thing we actually get our moneys worth out of. Or is paying a combat Soldier too disgusting to you?

There is no such thing as a

There is no such thing as a "leaner (and more capable)military". But by gutting out nation's ability to protect our interests WORLDWIDE, and giving those "savings" to free loaders, all the while borrowing from China because our elected stooges won't balance a budget, at least "Generation Gimme" will be fat and well fed when we fall to our enemies.

Democrats will sell us into slavery as long as they are retained as task master and tax collector.

BUFF will never go away, no

BUFF will never go away, no weapon places more fear in our enemys.
