VIRGINIA BEACH

A 46-year-old woman will serve no prison time for shooting to death her adult son.

A Circuit Court judge Wednesday sentenced Angelica Michelle Lee to five years in prison on one count of voluntary manslaughter, but suspended all of the time, said Macie Pridgen, a spokeswoman for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. Lee is on supervised probation and must refrain from alcohol, Pridgen said.

According to testimony, alcohol and prescription medications contributed to Lee deciding to shot her 24-year-old son, Marcus Duran Reese, during an altercation at her Windsor Oaks home on Aug. 15, 2009. Lee testified she'd felt threatened, and family members said Reese had a history of violent behavior. He died at a hospital.

Police charged Lee with first-degree murder and use of a firearm, but Judge John C. Morrison convicted her of the lesser charge after a day-and-a-half bench trial in September.
